I have a new MX6436 with the Dual-Layer DVD burner drive.

My machine has 1.5 gigs of RAM.

The DVD drive is continuously accessed by the computer, even when there is not a disc in the drive. It's "Driving" me crazy!

I have to keep the tray partially ejected just to shut off the noise.

Oddly, if the drive is shut, it spins up EVERY time I copy and paste anything.

That's not the ONLY time it spins up -- but it does happen EVERY time I copy and paste.

I thought buying more memory would fix this, which is why I upgraded to 1.5 gigs. That did speed up everything on the computer, but did not solve my "chatty drive" problem.

    Any suggestions?

Perhaps the drive is defective. Possibly deleting the ide drivers will help.

The drive functions great otherwise - burns and plays CDs and DVDs just fine.

Er...if I delete the IDE drivers does that mean something is going to stop working? Not quite sure I understand.

If the drive is constantly accessing, even while there is no disc, something is amiss. Plus it is driving you crazy, right? The ide connector is the connector between the drive and the motherboad. Sometimes when a drive is having issues deleting and letting Windows re-install it when rebooted will help. It is not a great chance, but worth a shot. You might want to try to disable autoplay. I still think the drive being defective is the most likely candidate.
