I have a two year old MX6442 notebook that was operating fine until November 2007, when the AC adapter no longer charged the battery. I thought I had a short in the adapter, so I bought a new one -- but the problem persisted. After seeking the advice of Gateway's tech support, they advised me that the DC jack in my notebook had shorted and should be replaced.
So I went to my local PC repair shop and shelled out $350 bucks for this little jack to be replaced.
They called me today and, apparently, the jack was not the issue. The charger circuit in the motherboard has gone bad, and to repair this I will have to replace the motherboard entirely. Has anyone else had an issue with this? Is there anything I can do? I can't really afford to pay for a new motherboard in addition to the PC shop's labor, but I start college in two weeks and need my notebook back.
Any help is appreciated.
