    Hi all,

Last week I bought a Gateway T2300 Core Duo laptop. I ran the CPUZ program to look at the specs and frequency of the processor. Much to my surprise I noticed that the core frequency is only at 997.9 MHz. Should it not runs at 1.6GHz? I know that a laptop can slow down its speed when it does not need too much processing power. However, even if I am running a CPU intensive application, the core still stays at 998 MHz. I also installed Notebook Hardware Control to change the core speed but it seems to have no effect. Anyone has an idea if this is normal?

    Thank you!

    Sylvain

with intel's speedstep technology. The processors speed decreases when it is not being used demandingly. So nothing is wrong with your notebook.

Try running two instances of super pi simultaneously and use NHC or (as i use) RM Clock to monitor the CPU.

I did and it was giving me 100% for both CPU. But still the speed in NHC stayed at 1GHz. I am running on AC power. I changed the CPU speed to Max Performance. When I bought it one week ago, I ran a CPU benchmark with Sandra lite and it gave me around 12000 MIPS. Now it gives me only 6700. So I know it ran at 1.6GHz once. Could this be a defective desktop? Or could NHC be incompatible with the MX6708?

I finally uninstalled NHC and the cpu speed now get at 1.6GHz when under load. So it looks like NHC doesn’t like my Gateway or the reverse...

the speed should always throttle down when the cpu isnt being pushed, its not just to save battery, it also greatly reduces the heat output of the system, having the cpu at full power all the time is like idleing your car at max rpms, your going nowhere just as fast with lower rpms, without adding more heat and wear and tear, when you need it, it'll go to full power without skipping a beat
