So, Gateway people, I just bought this laptop with the intention of hanging on to it until Christmas to see if another, better deal pops up in the mean time. It says its sold out on BB's website but I found it at my local store for $729 out-the-door. I was curious if you all think it would make a good multi-tasker to do Office tasks, Windows Remote Desktop to clients' servers, large spreadsheets, cd/dvd buring/ripping, light-duty video editing and running the new Vista Aero Glass theme...

Also, what kind of upgradeability does the socket have if I wanted to go to a better proc after the prices fall?

Should be a nice machine...the intel GMA950 is no powerhouse, but SUPPOSEDLY it will run aero. You can upgrade to any core solo/core duo or core 2 duo processor as long as the BIOS or a BIOS flash will support it. You may want to add more memory...especially when vista comes out.

Gateway seems to have changed since I've owned one (just 2 months ago :p). It seems that they are putting more effort into advertising and satisfying under new management and all. Service was exceptional when I needed it though.
Unfortunately I can't tell you about reliability of that particular machine as I've never owned one ;)

great.... did you run it "as is" or did you re-install the OS... I haven't yet gotten to play with it since it's my Christmas present so I don't know how much bloatware, etc. is on it...

too much bloatware comes with gateway's products...i recommend reinstalling (in my case, vista rtm) the OS.

what kinds of games were you referring to when you said "mild games"? I'm just curious... I won't be using this laptop for gaming but it would be nice to know what I could run... thanks...

Here is a list of the gma's compatilbility list:

    http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel945gm/sb/CS-021400.htm

Don't take it to heart though...some people have been able to run half-life 2 and gta san andreas, etc.

    Games I've tried and tested:
    UT2004
    Half Life episode one
    Black and White 2
    Prince of persia two thrones
    Rise of Legends
    Max Payne 2
    Quake 3

All on reasonable low settings of course...
