    I just reformatted with Windows XP Professional, and can't burn DVD's at 8x (only at about 2x). Is there an update i can download for this? thanks

    What firmware are you at. Maybe you need a firmware update for your burner.

    The drive isn't built to reach that speed. Firmware updates may unlock other features but seldom yield an increase in speed, which is something usually inherent to the hardware.

    No, my LG4120b would not write certain brands of media at 8X until I did a firmware update. I now get 12X on certain 8X media. The default for the 8040 may just be 2X. And a firmware update may just list this particular media at 8X.
