I was trying to burn a dvd and found out from Nero that it can only burn at 2x, is there a firmware upgrade to boost up the speed or is it just a 2x dvd burner?

I'm not quite sure because I didnt really burn anything yet on the MX7515 lol, but the one good thing, usually, from burning slower is that it will give a lot better quality than burning at 16x, like a scanner, if u select quality option it scans sooo much slower but picture shows up on screen with every little detail maing it more fine, but set it to normal or quick, u get either an average picture or real crappy one and cant understand what ur looking at lol. So music/movies u burn will and should come out better quality in picture(for movie) or sound(for music), I would presume. When I do burn something I will let you know if it is program or burner.

Ryvius, your problem most likely lies with the brand of media that you are using. I know when I try to use Dynex media on the laptop I can only burn at 2x, but if I use a more reliable media like TDK then I can get 8x out of it. These burners are just very picky. Try a different brand and see if that helps. Even nero will base burning speed on the type of media in the drive. If you use Nero Infodrive it will tell you max speed of the drive though based on firmware information.

I'd definetly agree, try some different media. Taiyo Yudens are consider to be the best. FujiFilm DVDs sold at BestBuy and elsewhere marked Made in Japan are TYs. You can also get them at places like Rima.com.

Just cause it works on one doesn't mean it will work on the other. You can use DVD Identifier to see who makes the discs. Look them up on Videohelp.com to see what experiences others have had with them.

No, 0H37 is the latest. From what I have figured out, the last number is the issue of the Firmware. The 'H' refers to manufacturer of the laptop, (h=hewlitt packard, n=nec, g=gateway as examples). The drives are all LG's, so it does not really matter what the letter is, only the last number. My original firmware was 0G34. Just because Gateway is behind times, is no reason that I should be.
I'll leave it up to you as to whether or not you want to be region free or not. Further information is on http://tdb.rpc1.org/ or http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=91

NOT ALL 75xx SERIES OPTICAL DRIVES ARE HL-ST-DT (or whatever the heck it is).

My old one was. The one in my current 7510GX is a TSSTCorp (or as I like to call it, "Testicorp"), and the name is pretty self explanatory. If you don't know exactly what you're doing with the firmware flash, DON'T DO IT.

If it is the wrong drive the LG fimware update program will not let you flash it. Use a prorgam such as Everest or DVD Identifier to tell you what brand of a drive you are dealing with. It's about as idiot proof as ot goes.

Not for a while now, unless your store just had a huge stock. The FujiFilms have switched over to a cheap Taiwan manufacturer. You can check easily on your BestBuy store shelves, the TYs have a blue insert on top of the first disc, and the side says made in Japan. The new ones from FujiFilm don't have the blue insert on top, and say made in Taiwan. If youre store still has the TY's, snatch 'em up while you can.

I also buy a lot of my media from discmakers.com, they specialize in DVD/CD reproduction, but you can buy bulk blank media from them for a reasonable price, and its all high quality. (I just bought a 100DVD batch and its all TY's and I got them for under $0.50 each). There ar some better deals out there, but at least I always know what I'm getting from these guys and they're not fakes.

Well.. I tried to burn about 6GB on a TDK DVD+R DL disc.. and it failed at 2.4x speed..
    .
I've successfully burned four DVD+RWs up to 4.5GB of data at 4x speed.
