    Hi everyone,
    Has anyone upgraded their 2x512 PC2700 to 2x512 PC3200?
I ask since the machine runs at 200FSB x 13 Multipl, it would be benifitial to have the ram sync with the FSB for better performance. Futhermore, how many ram slots does the pc have? I haven't opened her up yet, but I'm assuming 3 slots since the spec mentioned the max amount of ram is 1536. Can anyone confirm this?

    Thanks,
    SyN

    1. I've read on the forums that PC3200 doesn't work in 7xxx series Gateways due to increased power consumption. The memory slots just don't power the RAM enough to run at DDR400 speeds.

    2. There are two RAM slots; one at the bottom of the machine and one buried under the keyboard. That's why the max spec listed is 1.5GB; it's really 2GB, but the one slot is not user accessible.

    I have two MX7515's.

Also, back in 2006 a friend of mine bought an MX7525 or MX7527 when it was new from BestBuy based on my recommendation.

On my friend's computer, I had him upgrade the RAM from 2 x 512MB to 2 x 1GB, PC2700. The folks at BestBuy were able to do this, and since the warranty was issued by BestBuy, this did not void the warranty.

Recently I upgraded both of my machines to 2Gb. One is running PC2700 and the other is running PC3200. Based upon what I saw in the forums, I decided to risk buying the PC3200. I don't know if the RAM really is running at 400Mhz, but it is otherwise working fine. That is, I haven't run any benchmarking software to see if there's a difference.

I went to BestBuy to have them do the install of the hard to reach module. They currently offer that service for $40. So it's totally worth it.

I don't know if it's my imagination, but the 2 1GB modules may have added additional heat to the system as they are getting quite these days, especially with the 7200RPM drive I installed. Also, I am running a 24" external monitor at 1920 x 1200, so all of this together seems to be creating quite a little hot box.

My challenge now is dissipating the heat.
