hi i bought the gateway 7811 fx about 2 months ago. I played counter strike source on it unfortuanetly after like 10minutes or more of play the computer just freezes and i gotta restart by presing the power button. Also the computer was pretty hot. I dont know how hot it was and cant tell the differnece between normal hot and abnormal hot. I thought this was a steam problem so i jsut didn't mind. Then for about 1month i played light games like maplestory and it was no problem. But now i started lord of the rings online and it freezes the same way. I dont know much of computerrs and i bought this lappy like 2 month ago so i can't replace it. TT wat should i do??

Download HWMonitor and monitor the tempatures, This is what Im doing, I get 95 C for Crysis after 1 hour playing, and am now asking in the other topic if I should return or not
-
how about you start reading the 7811 sticky thread ?
-
-
wat is and where is the sticky thread?
-
go here press ctrl+f type 7811 press enter
-
Ha, you gateway dudes and your overheating issues. might as well put a pot over it with water and boil an egg. shouldnt take too long, huh?

i saw the temperature for my graphic card and it was over 80 when i was playing lotro. Is that normal? i think this is too reason why my computer crashese. Are all 7811s like that or mines a defect?
-
80 is high but not exceptionally high. gpus should be able to hit above 90 without crashing.
-
i only played 20min into the game and it was 81. If i played longer im sure it would go over 90. thats why it keeps crashing for me i think? GAH i guess i do have a defective unit.... why me???!?!??! i cant even excahnge it now how gey...
-
also my HD temperature is 56 degrees. I just read in a forum that over 50 was way too high. Is soemthing wrong with my HD also. ***.. i got the ****tiest 7811 in this world... Is there anyway i can get it to be running fine? If i go to bb to repair it, how much would it cost?

If you are stuck with it, then just raise the back of the lappy about an inch to let good airflow get to the GPU fan intake. On my system Crysis climbed up to 93C and crashed within 50 minutes. With the back propped up (and not blocking any vents), Crysis runs at 71C rock solid. FurMark was a different story...
As always, your mileage may vary. -
jacob808 do restrict your humor to people more experienced around these forums, no need to scare anyone off. we try to help here.
xbahamunatx, dont worry about the hdd temp, the cooling guide is full of crap, there is no such thing as a danger zone large scale testing by Google showed no correlation between hdd temp and their failure rate.
as to the gpu temp, you can lower the resolution while gaming, prop the back of the laptop up, get a notebook cooler, avoid crysis and dont o/c.
BB dont repair notebooks, that would be gateway. and it will take loooong time. -
According to the google report, there is a higher failure rate for drives kept at 15 - 30C for the first two years. By the third year, drives running over 45C had a much higher failure rate than any other drives (drives kept 40 - 45C also had a significantly higher failure rate than drives under 40C).
Another important note regarding that report is it never stated the maximum temperature they tested, and based on the graphs they used it would seem that they didn't thoroughly test drives running hotter than 50C.
Google report for more information
"Overall our experiments can confirm previously
reported temperature effects only for the high end of our
temperature range and especially for older drives. In the
lower and middle temperature ranges, higher temperatures
are not associated with higher failure rates. This is
a fairly surprising result, which could indicate that datacenter
or server designers have more freedom than previously
thought when setting operating temperatures for
equipment that contains disk drives. We can conclude
that at moderate temperature ranges it is likely that there
are other effects which affect failure rates much more
strongly than temperatures do."
They basically state that in the lower and middle temperature ranges, the relatively higher temperatures among those are not associated with higher failure rates. This doesn't mean that a high temperature rate (over 50C) will not affect the longevity of the drive. The google report doesn't appear to have tested running a drive averaging 55C - 60C. They do, however, "confirm previously reported temperature effects only for the high end of our temperature range and especially for older drives" which would seem to indicate that a drive running very hot (the 7811s hd's operating range is 0-60C) could be affected by temperatures.
Best solution? Backup often! (Note: this advice applys to all hard drives at all times, so this isn't really an exception to the rule). -
my only question is why wait 2 months to discuss that issue with us? U cant exchange it now ...

-
get a block of ice and put your laptops on it while you game.
-
or you could have your sister with a running water hose shooting the back of the notebook while your gaming just be careful not to get electrocuted.
