    HELP!
New to this forum. New to the computer age! Decided to by Gateway MX6025 (price was right) at BB without researching and checking reviews. I was familiar with the Gateway name so I felt comfortable in purchasing.

After 2 months, the notebook decided it did not want to work. Brought it back to BB which diagnosed it as a broken harddrive and they handled that problem (not in a timely manner, but was handled). Here it is, another month later and I have another major problem. When I turned on the notebook, the LCD display is messed up. It looks like it cracked on the inside.

NO, the notebook was never dropped, never in an extreme temperature condition, never had anything dropped on or placed on top. As a matter of fact, it was locked away in a desk drawer. I spoke to a co-worker of mine who use to work for Gateway who explained it like this......

Gateway once big company, lots of stores, no longer. Big cuts, cheaper product, GOOD LUCK!

He says no matter what I say, Gateway will determine item was dropped.

Has anyone had a similar problem. Friend and I conclude that we only have one chance to get this resolved. If we contact Gateway and they insist
that I dropped it, then I'm screwed. We were thinking about purchasing BB extended w/drop insurance, then returning it to them later. SOMETHING! I sure hate to think hard earned money was wasted on this crap.

If it's been a few months...you can't purchase the BB extended plans. That'd be fraud anyways.

If the screen is cracked...then frankly, it was physically damaged by some type of abuse. However, if it's an internal distortion of some sort..it might be covered. At first glance, those issues can both appear to be abuse...but a tech can usually tell that it wasn't obviously from extra pressure on the screen's face or a drop on a leading edge. At least give Gateway a chance to look at it. I'd accept the fact that screen issues like this don't usually just happen...so even if you don't think you dropped it, something may have pressed on the screen(even while the lid was closed...from above) and caused it...but maybe it is an internal defect that Gateway might cover. You never know until you let them check it. I'd go direct through Gateway though, and not via Best Buy.

This is basically true, but the fact is that all computers are cheaper (from a price perspective). Also, ANY company will inquire if you dropped the notebook. Cracks don't just magically appear.

But predicting specific Gateway policies at this moment or any moment is difficult: Gateway's financial difficulties have caused a major change in direction, or management, or both once every two years. Including just a month ago.

My suggestion: do the right thing. Don't try to buy an extended warranty. Just honestly describe what happened. Gateway got to be pretty efficient at replacing the cracked hinges on the M68xx and M74xx series.

Sorry for the terrible pictures. Dont know if it will help. There doesnt seem to be an impact point. It does look like the screen in under water.

PS- The BB option was stated as a frustration statement and in no way meant as a real option for me

I assure you that is not the case. Locked desk drawer. But I have resigned to the fact that your response is what the conclusion is going to be. So what is the next step? Am I out $$$? Would I be allowed some trade-in $ toward a new purchase? (Guarantee it wont be a Gateway!) Is there any value to the internal parts I can sell?

    Thanks ALL for your help.

i guarantee you that if you get a quote on replacing that screen its gonna be between 7 and 900 dollars. Now, you could maybe find someone who it "partsing" one out on ebay and buy the screen and replace it yourself, or... you could make it into a little slimline wiorkstation. I mean its a good computers and just put lcd on it and hook up a wireless mouse and keyboard. Thats what i recommended for my friend... he was driving to school on the interstate and his steering locked and he rolled his jimmy like 7 times, ejecting the compaq notebook (in a case) and tearing it all to bits on one side. The screen and part of the keybaord were horrible, but he hooked to external and it runs fine. But seriously man, I can SEE the breaks in there. It might not have been to your knowledge, but it looks like very other broken lcd iv ever seen

If the crack is on the second layer of the LCD screen, it might be a defect on the LCD. I have seen cracks like that which occured due to overheating of the LCD. I dont think you should give up on it if your really being honest about the crack.

Given the array of fingerprints on it and the fact that it is on top of a toybox makes me think that a young child had something to do with it.
