I know the machine needs a new mobo but I'm doing everything I can to prevent that, and repair the problem. At one point I noticed the charger plug and socket heating up a lot, and finally the smell of burning plastic and fiberglass began coming out of the system fans. Upon disassembly, I discovered that the socket had burned up completely. Here's where I'm going to lose you guys. I soldered two wires to the remains of the plug. I connected these to the charger (ensuring correct polarity) and tested it. The machine booted fine the first few times, drawing a current of about 250mA. After I put the machine back together it began not booting. The charge light and power light were on. No change on power on, except the machine power indicator was on. Upon disassembly and examination I noticed a sound coming from what I believe to be the charging circuit. Here is a recording: http://tralce.com/audio/gateway.mp3
My question is this: Can I rewire anything to make this thing work? I don't care if I have to hardwire the machine to the charger, it just needs to work. Barring that, where can I get an exact replacement for the motherboard and how much would I expect to pay for it?
