Make the beep go away!

So I bought a Gateway NV5925u and I love it. This laptop is great, especially for only $800. It's also much more attractive with a patterned bronze finish, than it's boring blue Acer brother, the Aspire 5740G-6979.

But like the Acer, it makes a horrifically loud BEEP! every time I plug in or unplug the power supply while the computer is running.

Is there any way to make it go away? It's really embarrassing to have that piercingly loud beep go off in class or the school library.

 

did you check in the bios for a setting having to do with it? maybe its an internal speaker that has the volume turned up all the way in the bios?

i think i would have gone crazy by now and taken the laptop apart looking for this noise emitter and removed it (its most likely a speaker)

That solution does not appear to work. Whenever I uninstall the Realtek HD drivers, Windows just automatically reinstalls them.

 

When you right click and uninstall Realtek drivers in Device Manager. It will popup a warning window. Make sure you check "Delete the driver software for this device." and click OK. Otherwise, it will install Realtek drivers again when you restart the computer.

 

I wonder if updating the Realtek drivers will enable me to remove the beep without invalidating the sound chip's capabilities. Realtek shows that new drivers were released on 05/05/10, so they appear very recent.

 

Here is the solution to disable the annoying PC Beep.

However, you will lose the Dolby Home Theater tab (found in 2.48+ drivers) and have a weaker microphone, but you will still have all the Realtek sound effects, microphone enhancements, virtual surround sound, etc. It's your choice if you want to install this driver to disable the PC Beep.

1. Uninstall previous Realtek drivers in "Device Manager".
2. Check "Delete the driver software for this device." then click OK.
3. Download Realtek HD Audio 2.29 Driver download from Guru3D.com.
4. When you extract the Guru3D.com folder. Install the setup.exe file in the Vista_Win7_R229 folder.
5. Restart the computer.
(Failure to follow these steps would result in Microsoft HD Audio drivers installing after Windows 7 restart.)

i know that on other computers that have this issue there is a setting in that exact same window but the one you would turn down would be called pc speaker or something similar.
(lots of people would think this would turn the master volume down)

i would look for this option in the newest drivers first before installing an older version

EDIT: after searching for a bit on the emachines model im talking about i found a video describing the process (its a video for a gateway nv5207u but its the same audio chip so it should be similar to yours)

The PC BEEP does not have anything to do with the master volume.

Also, the latest Realtek drivers do not have the PC BEEP option. People's temporary solution is to uninstall Realtek drivers and use Windows 7 default sound drivers to get rid of the PC BEEP or to mute all sounds to get rid of the PC BEEP. This solution fixes that. There are over 30 pages about this problem and nobody has found the solution. Go and read the Acer Aspire 5740G owner's thread. I am the first one to find the solution to this PC BEEP problem and I am just giving back to the community.

I tested this on my Acer Aspire 5740G and it works perfectly. There isn't that much difference between this version and the latest Realtek HD Audio 2.48 Driver. It is 100% compatible with the Gateway NV5925u and Acer Aspire 5740G because it's just an older driver version made for this specific soundcard chip that are in these laptops.

 

ok calm down i dont know where your getting your attitude from but i never said it had anything to do with the master volume. I merely stated that people think it would. (i guess i could have said "but it doesnt" at the end although i didnt think it was necessary to be that black and white about it)

i also never stated that the newer drivers had this option i just said it would be best if you tried it on the newer drivers first. I think thats a rational path to take. Hell i can honestly say i dont know much about it because i have a conexant audio chip in my laptop (obviously im not taking into account the experience i had long ago with the emachines notebook because that was long ago therefore making it irrelevant to newer tech)

i cant believe there are over 30 pages and no solution is found i would have gone insane with that noise

I don't know how you read my passage as having an attitude. I was simply correcting you on what you said. Since, I also own the Acer Aspire 5740G laptop with the exact same specs at the Op's Gateway laptop (Acer & Gateway is the same company). I gave him the solution to fix his problem.

Also, the YouTube video you listed is from an older model laptop with a Coxexant sound driver and not a Realtek sound driver. The PC BEEP problem only exist in newer laptops with the HM55 motherboard and i3, i5, i7 Core processors; that is why older solutions like the one from the YouTube video will not work.

I hope this clear things up.

Since I installed the new (old) drivers, Realtek HD Manager feels the need to give me a notification every time I plug in or unplug my headphones... kinda weird.

 

Haha. That's not a major issue. At least, you know your headphones are plugged in or not.

If you want to get rid of the notification. Open Acer HD Audio Manager. Click on the "i" icon on the bottom right. Then uncheck "Display icon in notification area." It will no longer display a notification each time you plug in or unplug your headphones. If you do this you will have to find Acer HD Audio Manager in the Control Panel to change any settings.

 

Wouldn't it be better than setting the beep volume to 0, just to mute the PC Beep?
