What is the difference between Gateway® P-7920u FX Edition and the 7805u in that the 7805u can only have 4gb ram? What is limiting it? Would really like to bump up to 8gb. :)

Your not gonna notice a diffrence between 4-6-8gigs of ram because your computer isnt gonna use it all.

Now hold on just a second here.
I've never worked with 8 (or even 6) GB's of RAM before, but I can see that whenever I am trying to install a new (large) game using PowerISO ("mounting" the disk to a virtual drive) the installation process eventually consumes ALL 4GB of RAM and until it's completed my computer is really slow (since there's no more RAM left for the other apps).

Couldn't the extra 2 or 4 GB's make a difference here? I mean if a game's size is 6.5GB's I assume that the same process can't take up the whole 8GB's!

Or perhaps there's something wrong with what I am doing! :p

Well, if you run JDownloader and 20-30 tabs of Firefox or Internet Explorer, + java/flash addons + a winrar process running + all those backround tasks, I can only tell you that my task manager almost daily shows the RAM usage exceeding 3.5GB's! And try to imagine running an installation as I described before, with all the above running!

I can only guess that if there was more (ram) there it'd be used as well, but given your experience and certainly given the prices for the 4gb modules are still quite high, I 'll wait! :)

Yeah, just took a look around and 8gb ram (2-4gb) is around $300. Hmmm....I think I may wait til January.

Get a SSD, you would notice WAY more of an upgrade that way over the 8gb of RAM. And cost about the same money. If you find you still get bottlenecked only then would i ever recommend upgrading ram. Honestly i would suggest less multitasking over the more ram... the more you try to do over a certain limit the less you get accomplished, so you end up hurting your productivity the more you try to multitask

Thanks, I 've been considering an SSD even prior to buying my P7811FX over 14 months ago. However ssd's are still not where I'd like them to be.
When prices drop a bit more I'll get a mainstream ssd for this baby, then (in 2-3 years) I'll be looking at a 500GB "performance" SSD (ok 256GB at least) Sata III 6Gbps drive (something that will actually utilize this bandwidth) for the monstrous desktop I'll be building (though with 22-28nm parts in prospect, it shouldn't be so "monstrous").

To me more RAM has always meant more multitasking! If certain apps don't respond well it's their fault (Internet Explorer etc), I just like to have everything open in the backround just to be able to keep track of things (and I also use "favorites" etc).
