Hi,
I'm interested in getting myself an ID5822U or a NV5814U, they both feature Intel GM45 and Onboard Intel 4500 video card.
All the places I looked so far say that these laptops can handle max 4GB of memory. However, per intel specifications, the GM45 chipset can address 8GB of ram.
The NV58 uses DDR2 and ID58 uses DDR3. They both come with 4GB of installed memory.
I'm asking this because in the future (~5 years from now) I may need 8GB of memory to keep up with internet, e-mail and other applications.

Dude, most machines are just not meant to be used that long. Hardware just doesn't stay that current. By the time 5 or so years rolls around you will want a new system as the CPU chipset and a host of other things will make your system of today lethargic by comparison to even a chaep system at that time..........

And that's true! Sometimes I forget how fast technology improvements go.

I think both of those laptops have chipsets that support 8GB, but you need motherboard and BIOS support as well. Basically the only thing you can do now is get the computer and try 8GB when it is affordable.
And no one is going to need 8GB to keep up with internet and e-mail...not for a long long time. -

Would it be the same if i put a 8 gig flash driver with speed-boast?
-
Didn't someone try 8 gigs? Or is getting 8 gigs pretty soon? Also, no, speed-boost wouldn't be the same. And even if it was the same in principle, ready boost is trash.

8GB has already been confirmed to be working in p7805u/p7811 IIRC by alitunay.

Yes, HM -
I'd say it is reasonable to say that the 7800 series will all take 8G RAM. -
You can use 8gb of ram with the MC78 series of gateway
.

. But be SURE that Ill post when they get avalible also Im willing to help the people of here to get the ram, I would ship it even to the north pole if its possible.
But you know... it is not a HUGE performance upgrade, an SSD would do better.

I already have a SSD, so 8GB of RAM would just be something for fun (but only at the REALLY cheap price you found
)
Memory upgrade to 8GB support
