I have bought a FX 6860 at best buy when ever it was only $1099. I play alot of Half Life 2 mods but my microphone seems to be messed up. Whenever I talk into the built in mic it is super scratchy and no one can understand what im saying. Im using a headset that I bought for the 360 which works in vista but its having issues with games because of driver issues. I believe the drivers are conflicting with each other. Has anyone else had trouble with their microphones?

My mic isn't scratchy, it messes up in a weird way. Whenever I first open an application up that uses the mic it won't work until I close the program and reopen it. Then the mic works perfectly fine. It's just when it initially opens that the problem occurs. And a gateway rep just blew me off by giving me the link to the microphone troubleshooting page which I had already looked at.

I have a 6831 which is pretty much the same machine with some lesser specs by the way of hdd space, ram, etc. Anyhow, out of the box the mic did not work well at all. super scratchy as mentioned, and you would have to speak loudly about 2 inches away from it to even get it to pick up anything. No amount of adjusting the settings helped. Shortly afterwards per usual with notebooks and pre-built desktops, I wiped the drive to install a generic clean copy of windows to get rid of all the bloat and all. A clean generic copy of Vista Ultimate went on the 6831. Right off the bat the mic worked completely normally. I dont know what was with the default factory install causing it, but seems to be that is what it was as it is working completely normal with clean windows.

My 6831 doesn't even appear to have a mic. I mean I know it's technically there but it has never worked, and neither Vista nor any games even recognize that I have one. I've never cared since I always use my Sennheiser headset anyway, but last time I tried the mic didn't work when I plugged it into the mic jack, I have to use the USB adapter that came with it to get the mic to work. I'm sure the two problems are probably related, but whatever, it's not that important to me right now. You know, now that you mention it, I haven't tried it since I did a clean install the other day, I'll have to investigate that.
