Ok, I got mine working for Counter-Strike finally without having to use a USB port.

Plug in the headphone and mic jacks. If the IDT thing doesn't pop up for you, try and see if there's a shortcut or something so it will show up. Mine just popped up when I plugged them in.

On the right side of the Audio IDT Control Panel is a section for Jacks. Make sure the second one down is set for Device: Mic. Then exit and it should work fine from now on.

Also, it seems to require I do this everytime I plug my mic in which is a pain, but only takes a few seconds.

I had this same issue trying to get Ventrilo to work the other night. I tried tons of stuff. Finally I realized there is a custom IDT setup utility in the control panel with my Vista factory install. I absolutely could not get my external mic to work through any means other than using the IDT control panel utility. I believe you either unmute or check the appropriate microphone to enable (I don't remember off-hand at the moment what I checked to fix the issue but it is easily found in this utility). This goes unnoticed because Vista is always taking you to the setup audio devices screen from the taskbar volume icon and it just simply does not work.

Use the IDT control panel utility that comes with your Vista factory install to setup the mic and you should have trouble at all. Mine is working superbly now. I can use the onboard now or the external one.

For those of you who did a clean install. I found that when reinstalling the IDT sound drivers that the IDT utility does not install, only the drivers do. This did not allow me to control the mic through that utility. Plugging the mic in and out while Vista was already running would never allow the mic to work no matter what was done. To fix this, plug the mic into the jack and reboot the machine. For some reason when it's plugged in when Vista starts, it recognizes the mic properly and it works all the time. Basically once plugged in, it will always work when the machine is booted up.

I failed to mention in my above post that I noticed the exact same behavior that rawidema has described. It was the only way I could seem to get any functionality prior to using the factory installed IDT control panel utility.

So I think it's safe to say that if you want an external mic to work correctly in Vista with this machine you need the IDT control panel utility that is supplied with the factory install. Otherwise it just won't work until you reboot the machine with the external mic already plugged in. The built-in mic will continue to be active and there is nothing you can do for some reason.

We are having the same issue. I'm not super technical but this should be enough to get to where my wife can use her headset to raid Gruul's Lair and I can sleep.

Another tip: I found after installing Vista service pack 1 that my mic did not work again. I have found that if you go into control panel and click on the more options option that the IDT sound control panel is listed there. Click on that to open the sound control panel. On the right you will notice the line in jack. You can change this to be "line in" or "mic". Once you change it to "mic" the mic works fine again. Hope this helps anyone who may be having more trouble after upgrading to Vista service pack 1.

Is there a way to keep the setting of "Line In/Mic In" to stay in "Mic In"?

Everytime I want to use a mic, I have to reset this. I have unchecked the "Allow reconfigutation pop-ups" yet it still does revert to "Line In" after I unplug the mic.

Not sure about that one MINIz guy. I know that after I changed it, my mic has continued to work without needing to do anything else.
