I've been reading that a lot of gateway laptops have their microphone jacks broken, I'm afraid mine might be too.
When I plug in the microphone doesn't firmly push in/pull out like on the headphone port and when I do plug in a microphone the system doesn't detect it.
Does this mean it's broken? I'd don't know if it's even worth it to me to return it to the store for a replacement after all the trouble I've gone through setting up software and dual booting..
-
You could take it into best buy and let a geek squad guy take it, that way if they break it, its on them.
-
Well I'm pretty sure it's already broken, as the plug feels different and I can't get any mic to work.
Do you think they'd swap the hard drives if I asked for a replacement? -
All you can do is ask
-
Do a mic test, either in skype or record something in windows recorded.
I thought my mic plug wasn't working either until I tried that. actually works like a charm -
Wow it's not broken! I booted up XP Pro and ran some sound "wizard" and it worked fine, yeah!
No idea why it doesn't work in Vista, at least there's hope though
Thanks. -
Sounds (No pun intended) like you need to reinstall your sound driver in vista, then check your default settings.

ok so i registered solely for this thread. I also have a 6860fx and i had the same problem. incredibly simple fix. Go to the IDT Audio control panel and switch the jack from line in to microphone. Hope i helped.

Mine plugs in fine and enables the Line In / Microphone in the sound settings for microphone, but it doesn't detect anything and the on screen mic is still showing that it is getting input, even tho I have the default set to the line in.
Even if I disable the screen mic in that setting and just have the headset mic plugged in, still nothing.
Driver issue or hardware?
thanks all, -
Well, now I have both mics going at once anyway. o0
I'm sure I can fix that easily tho.
Thanks! -
right click on the sound icon down by the clock and select the correct mic u wish to use. then start the program u want....

Im having the same problem.. but mine wont fix as easy. I went into the sound recording place, and turned my mic in on, but it wont record. If anyone could help me i would be so happy. Also, i just got this laptop today and already there are a few problems with it. One is the mic, second is that the binding on the side of the laptop is coming off, and third is the lights between the - and the + symbols for the sound volume dont light up. Im thinking about returning this laptop =[ If anyone can help even one of these problems i would be very happy.
Sorry if this is an old topic by the way.
Oh, and last but not least, the power brick makes a really loud hissing sound =[
What a sad day -
take it back and have it replaced.
as for the lights between the volume. if you take a closser look. they aren't lights. they are painted on.
as for the mic, your answer is in this thread.
as for the binding on the side, rereer to answer number one. -
Wait.. so those lines between the + and - dont light up? Thats good news i think
Now all i need is to get this mic working and the little binding near the esc key to be fixed. -
that piece should just pop back into place. it has to do with taking out the keyboard.
-
And last question.. Can you please please help me fix my mic. I made it says 'use this device' but it doest work =[
