Hey guys, I just got my brand new Gateway NX250X! Im in love!!! The size and weight is perfect for my college needs. Got a couple of questions:

    1) Did any if you see little scratches on the Gateway logo box on the outside of your LCD screen? Not the actual Gateway lettering but the silver cow box logo. I see some little scratches on it depending on the angle im looking at. Was kinda bummed out about it. But ill get over it.

    2) Any of you have any suggestions of freeware programs to get rid of any unneeded windows start up programs AND windows services to speed up boot up time?

I removed some programs I didnt need and went into msconfig to turn off unneeded programs, but any of you know of a program that is good at doing it or any informational website?

    and lastly,

    3) Any recommendations on tight fit sleeve cases for the NX250X?

    Thanks! :gateway:

If you know which programs to disable try Starter at http://members.lycos.co.uk/codestuff/. It doesn't need to be installed, and freeware (my favorite combination).
Also right clicking on My Computer and clicking on manage will take you to the services screen where you can disable stuff. But again you kinda have to know what you're doing.

For looking up stuff to diasable, try googleing. That's how I slowly learned which stuff is important.

I use Regcleaner. It has a startup tab which lists all the programs that start with Windows. It is also free.

Last night I went thru and cleaned out some processes running using info found here - http://www.overclockersclub.com/gui..._services_2.php

I've got it down to 23 processes...

these are the ones I don't know anything about:
*showicon2K.exe - I think this has something to do with the media reader

There are a couple at startup like:
    *remind_XP -
    *RECGUARD -
*PDVDServ - which I tried to delete but somehow it came back
*NeroCheck - Which I just noticed and should be deleted - I imagine that it checks for updates - Why not just check when the program starts? Why check at system startup?

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

I use a freeware program called "Autoruns" from http://www.sysinternals.com

There's no installer. Just double-click to run.

It scans your system & you can right-click on any item to Google it.
Unchecking items doesn't delete them, just moves them in the registry to an inactive state. You can delete items if you want.

    Also try this:
    Start > Run > msconfig

Hit the Start Up tab, and you can select which programs you want to start with Windows. Go to the Services tab and you can select the services.

But be careful - if you have no idea what it is, let it go.
