The cpu in my MT6840 is at about 57-60C(a Intel core duo T2450 2.0GHZ),it seems to run a bit slow,i only use it for a few FPS games, and on the internet.
I'm considering opening it up and replacing the thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink with AS5 if i can lower core temperature more than the stock thermal compound?
    Gateway MT6840 15.4 notebook-
    Intel T450 Dual core
    2.00GHZ
    2.00 GB 533Mhz DDR2 ram
    Intel GMA 950 224mb
    160GB hdd

When was the last time you cleaned it out. If your idling at 57-60 degrees then you have a bit of a cooling problem.

Try blowing out your laptop with some canned air. That should help. Also yes AS5 or ICD7 would help alot with heat disapation.

The last thing you can do (and will make the largest difference after the cleaning) is to undervolt your CPU with RMClock. You will be amazed how much your temps will drop after you figure out your actual good operating voltages on your CPU.

Lol, yeah i took the cover off the bottom and theres not much dust there since i dont use the computer very often, but i havent cleaned it out in a while.
RMclock will work on a OEM board and cpu, also the Intel T2450 dual core only has a TDP of only 31 watts, will underclocking slow the cpu down?
Do you know of a idle temperature the Core duo T2450 should be running at?

    Yeah RMClock should work fine.

It wont slow down your CPU any. It doesnt mess with your stepping or your multipliers unless you want it to. All it does is remove extra voltage from the CPU that it doesnt need (takes some testing to find your lowest stable voltage but its worth it).

I have an x9000 that idles at 32-34C and tops out at 65-68C. Undervolting is great. But also replacing your thermal paste with a better quality one will be worth while (alot of people are swearing by ICD7, and it seems to out preform AS5 at almost everything)

I dont know off hand what it should idle at in that system, but i would think low 40's would be the highest idle you should see "normally"

Ok thx,i'll try out RMclock and maybe new thermal paste, taking off the heatsink/exhaust fan doesnt look too difficult.

EDIT-cleaned out the fan,and replaced the heat transfering pads w/ AS5 thermal compound, depending on room temp it runs about 8-15 deg. cooler...

Atfer having it on for awhile,it is idling now @ 44-48C,(57C before), with the fan off, this is a ok temperature for a dual core mobile cpu?
GPU appears to also use the same copper heat spreader as the notebooks cpu.
