I had a Syncmaster 713n lying around so I though I might as well hook it up to the good ole p6860. I'm wondering if it is possible to run a full screen program (like a game) on one monitor and switch to the second monitor without alt tabbing out of the game?

Not really, you have focus on the game and though it's only displayed on one monitor, you still need a way to break from that being the only application accepting input and set the focus to another window. But you can use other applications on the other monitor without minimizing the game once you've changed focus.

So by changing focus from the game do you mean alt tabbing?

That's how I'd do it. Normally I just minimize my games with Windows + D but if you have two monitors, and you want to do something on the other monitor but not minimize your game, say talk in a chat, you could alt tab to the chat and the game would still be maximized on its screen, it just would not have focus for the input (keyboard and mouse). You could chat, then click on the game again to resume playing.
