Ok so I have a Gateway P-6860 FX and Im part of the group whose GPU overheats pretty badly (+90C) when under stress. Now a friend of mine helped me out a bit with this where I can maintain good temps (about 60 under stress) but in order to have that I have to keep the notebook on Power Saver mode, which as you may know reduces performance. I also have a Zalman NC2000 cooler I bought recently and that helps a ton as well.
I had recently installed a new Nvidia driver as recommended by the sticky on this forum and that also help lower the temps a bit more. Still now when I go back to Balanced mode the temps can get as high as 80 so Im worried I might get the same shut-off problems like I was having before.
So my question is if theres anything else that can be done to try and lower the temps a bit more. Any help appreciated, thanks

blow out the vents with compressed air.
-
or try lifting the back up a little, stick a few dvd cases or a book under the battery, when i first did that the temps went down by at least 5C.
-
stick little rubber feet on the bottom to raise it

You could take it apart and replace the thermal paste on the GPU. I have a thread about that somewhere.

would undervolting the CPU help the GPU temps?
-
Hmm would that help with my GPU temps or just the CPU?
EDIT: "A Cooler CPU could also lead to a cooler GPU if they share the same heatsink/fan"... hmm my new question is do the GPU and CPU share the same heatsink/fan for the 6860?
2nd EDIT: Right so as I was doing the steps for Undervolting, I ran the Orthos program which put my CPU under stress. Its temps rose up but the GPU temps remained the same, which leads me to believe undervolting my CPU wouldnt help me in this case. Am I right? -
I don't believe that undervolting the CPU would help the GPU problems, but it is not a bad idea anyway.

I have a 6860fx also and under load my GPU has never risen above 70C. This is my setup.
I have run the laptop with the Belkin Laptop Cooing Pad. $15 from Walmart. I like it because it is concave so there is a gap between the laptop and the cooler. I blow out all vents about once a month. I run the nVidia laptop drivers from their website.
I hope this helps some. -
undervolting helps cpu and increases battery life by at least 20-30 mins. i know its the gpu thats your problem maybe buying a notebook cooler will help the situation at least a little i recommend this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998686
