This is just when the computer is sitting doing nothing at all. Is this normal? If not whats the normal temperature?

I'm trying to get gateway to warranty my laptop because I know they try everything to not repair or replace items.

I wish I could. After 15 seconds of gaming my screen turns white and my computer seems to freeze.

    clean-out your vents.
is powermizer off? (with powermizer off, your card runs at full clocks constantly)
    are you over clocked?
    try another vid driver.
maybe their is a gap between the thermal compound and the heat sink (to check this requires complete disassembly)
just trowing out a check list =P

if all else fails... your card might just be defective =(

A 60 degree GPU temperature is normal. GPUs can go into the 90's without issue.

On monday I'm going to give it to my buddy. He's going to put on thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and clean out all the dust. If it still does that, looks like I'm SOL.

My 6860 idle's at 42, and rarely hits 70C, so i don't think it normal.

I would check the fans, I just opened mine up the other day and ended up cleaning out the fans. I haven't had a can of air to clean it for the last 2 months, and there was a good amount of dust on the blades.

I used a can on the fans today and got a couple more minutes of game play today...woot! lol

I'm going to have my friend open her up when he gets a chance too, so he can clean everything inside and put on some thermal compound. Hopefully that will be the trick.

I will update and let you guys know how everything goes when he is done. Thanks for all the help!

That should definitely do the trick. Your temps resemble the same problem I had and after disassembling my pc and cleaning the fans and heatsink it dropped it down to high 30's idle and 67 while gaming.

    Good luck.

p.s. you are lucky you have someone to do it for you because it takes a good hour and a half to disassemble if you are unfamiliar with the process.

Also, whether that fixes the problem or not you should still make sure you have the latest video card drivers for the best performance and temp decrease.

yeah I'm going to update my drivers once I know this fixed the problem. I'm affaird like last time I won't be able to login to windows LOL.

On a side note....my computer run 100x faster now that I did the format lol. One good thing came out of this.
