Gateway/eMachines decided to fix the cracking problems under warranty, but they cracking caused other problems for some people. I had constant video issues the whole time I owned my machine and finally talked the vendor into replacing the machine under my extended warranty (after 7 repairs). Some people didn't experience any problems as a result of the cracks.

I've heard that the cracks had two causes: inferior materials, and poor hinge design.

My machine seemed to have more problems each time I sent it for repair.

I'm glad Gateway finally decided to address this problem by reinforcing their new notebook hinges with some sort of black metal alloy. The new hinges on their newer notebooks look really sturdy and crack-resistant.

Can you take a picture and show us the new hinge reinforcement? I am sending mine for repairs tomorrow and want to know how it should come back.
    Thanks!

Sorry, I think you may have misunderstood my post. Its my fault; I was in a rush and didn't make myself clear.
What I meant was that Gateway has fixed this problem by redesigning their newer notebooks such as the MX3410 and MX6450. These notebooks feature the new reinforced hinges and surrounding area.
I'm not sure how Gateway fixes their cracked notebook hinges for older models, but I'm sure they'll do a decent job (not just a cosmetic touch-up).
I'll post a picture of the new reinforced notebook hinges as soon as I get my digital camera (next week) if you're still interested.

    Sorry again for the misunderstanding.

Yeah, I was looking at the MX7118 and noticed the hinges and surrounding area were made entirely of plastic. Too much pressure on the hinges (possibly due to carrying the notebook on its side while closed) may have caused the cracks. This is a design flaw on the part of Gateway's part manufacturer (I hear its Arima).

No problem, thanks for the info. I am still interested in checking those new hinges, so if you don't mind I'll wait for your pictures.
I will also post my experience with this repair...
    Thanks!
