Haven't had a lick of problems with this machine until recently. Now my optical seems to be going on. She makes a strange whining noise randomly, mostly refuses to burn CDs but DVDs burn flawlessly, and reading disks will sometimes not work. Ejecting and reclosing the drive always works but still...seems I am in need of a replacement.

My parts store of choice, newegg, doesn't seem to have any so my questions to this community that has been the very very best to me and so many other users is:

    1. I'm pretty sure the optical drive is IDE, correct?
    2. where would I get one, several places would be great.
    3. I can't imagine swapping it out is terribly difficult, I seem to remember even a tutorial around here some where, all I can seem to remember is keeping the 'faceplate' of this drive. Anything else?

Thanks again for your assistance. I'm still clunking away with this machine and so far this is the only glitch I've had with it.

Yes it is a PATA IDE drive. I would for look for a used one on e-bay. Not sure but the bezel might not fit different models. Removing it is easy. You'll have to pry off the little D shaped rubber grommet on the bottom of the chassis, remove the screw, then pull it out.
