Well I just got a new Gateway P6860FX from Best Buy and its having huge problems running games. Whenever I play a game, specifically World of Warcraft or Call of duty 4, the whole computer freezes up, not just the game screen. I have no other choice but to improperly shut down. My friends and Geek Squad tell me that I just need to update all the drivers and wait for the newer driver to come out for my video card before it'll start working right. Is this true or is my computer just faulty?

Does it have the 8800M GTS? If so update to the latest available drivers, if the problems continue you might have a serious problem.

i doubt that's a driver problem. you'll have to be more specific. or you could skip the troubleshooting and exchange it.

Geek Squad could unknowingly gave oyu a virus from a home computer via his flash drive (or the like). Run a virus check?
If that's not it, its either overheating or a hardware failure; or both.

....hehe, or you need new drivers; but then the Geek-Squad dude would been able to do it.

1).It had that problem since it came out the box.
2).It's after 14 days, about 25 days already.
3).What do you mean more specific? What else do you need to know?

Which driver should I get from laptopvideo2go?

ummmmm... if you had the problem out the box, you should've exchanged it already. i hope you have a good warranty. bestbuy/geeksquad is shady.

download some testing tools to find out if you laptop is getting too hot:

    hwmomitor 1.10 - monitor temp
cpuz - cpu info - monitor cpu
gpuz - gpu info - monitor gpu
    3dmark06 - stress gpu
orthos / TAT - stress cpu

update to new drivers wont hurt, but there is no reason the old one didn't work, and yeah the geek squad should have done it 4 u.

the first time you went back to BB was after the 14 days deadline ?

I've got the same problem, my CPU and GPU are running hot. My Gpu idles at 70 C and my CPU idles at 53 C.

My GPU fan works, but I never see my CPU fan kicking. When does your CPU kick in? and can you hear it or feel it pushin air, cause mine doesn't. Any fixes for a not properly functioning CPU fan? I've tried the BOIS but there is not way to control the fan speed?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I did talk to Gateway and they are sending me a box to return the PC, but I'm not sure I trust them to fix it. They might just return it saying that it's running fine.

Under 3Dmark06 the GPU throttles badly, and the GPU gets all the way to 110 C and has shutdown twice. Any ideas on a home solution rather than sending it in and then hoping they fix (but I've heard horror stories using gateway's warranty)

Thanks for the help. (By the way I did a full system restore and have added any other programs other than Ntune HWmonitor and 3dmark06 to check the laptop.) stock drivers and OS and everything else.

    Thanks again.

But has anyone experienced this problem with the P6860??? If its not a normal problem i'll just abuse my "accidental" Warranty on it, but if it's a problem that others have fixed themselves, i'll just deal with it.

WOW runs on everything I own. I find it hard to believe that your 6860 will not run it with stock video drivers but sorry I do not run V64, only Vista 32.

Good question, does anyone with a stock 6860 run WOW?

My stock 6860 runs wow with all video settings on highest, with a 59fps.

When I turn on my game-interface mods for the game though it goes to 30fps.

Download and run Memtest86, DFT. Both will test your Memory and HDD respectively, for any issues. You need to download the iso of both and burn to a separate CD each.

me thinks he needs to give his 6860 back to BB...asap. Ask for a replacement but they may ask you to do a system restore to rule out "bent" software. Dealing with certain BB's is such a joy at times...
