He got a BSOD "Hardware Failure" and then nothing. The computer doesn't POST. When he boots it up, the screen lights up, the fans turn for 3 seconds but stop after, black screen. HDD light is flashing though. It booted into windows once though, hardware failure BSOD again.

Could this be a dead CPU? It's probably not the GPU since the screen wouldn't boot. Or even the whole mobo?

Its possible the CPU could be dead... its rare but it happens.

He can always pick up a new/used t5550 and check it out. They dont cost much.

Honestly though with just random "hardware failure" and a instant death it will be hard to tell the problem with out the computer and over a forum

Well he went on and bought a new desktop.

I was perplexed too and the computer is only a year and a half old.

If nothing else a small investment in a decent CPU (if its the CPU) he could probably turn around and sell the 6860 to recoup some of his desktop expenditure

You should sell the parts on here. I'm sure many people would be interested in purchasing them.

If he decides to go this route, I'm interested in the optical drive (the plastic bezel if he's willing to sell that separately).

Yes, it's been like 6 months and I'm still looking.

I'll ask him. $30 for a CPU seems nice, not much to loose.
