Is so frickin nice! Got a good deal on a used one. I upgraded it to a t9600 cpu then from that to a e8435! Totally capable of playing new games, the old stock cpu in it sux p8400 i believe, limited new games to 20fps, i see why this laptop was sold! Upgraded to 8gb ram, and im waiting on two xt ssd hybrid drives to put into raid0.

Now on to specifics, I tried diablo 3 on this thing, its getting fifty to 60 fps with everything maxed out, highest graphics lol!!
    Whats the Catches??
Well i was lucky to get a 1920x1200 res, do i want to use this high res to play newest games at 30 to 40 fps on low graphics, or do i want to lower it it 1300x768 something and play 50 to 60 fps with everything on high??
Turns out i can tell the difference in in running 50 to 60 fps compared to 30 to 40 fps.... So yes i will lower my res! That also means im switching my 1920 screen out f0r a 1440 screen haha! why cause 1400x 900 is alot better than my 2nd option on 1920 screen which is the 1300x768!! EDIT (I actually have a 1600 res option for gaming, so i will try it out before downgrading screens)
Another thing, i did not, and could not tell a difference in performance from 4gb ram to 8gb ram. And i did not tell a difference in going from the t9600 cpu to the e8435(t9900). T9600 and e8435 are under fifty bucks... The t9900 is over a hunderd so is the x9100 which are both 3.ghz just like the e8435, the t9600 is 2.8ghz but peforms the same.

Now very important, i used the latest vid drivers from gateway windows 7. I had it overclocked an running good, but i would get micro lag like every 30 secs, i thought it was my wireless card or cpu! Turns out it was the friggin gateway vid driver, all thier other drivers for win 7 are fine, but the vid one is terrible, get the latest nvidia driver 314.22 It stopped my micro lags, runs smooth never boggin down! Always it peforms like i already overclocked it, i dont even bother overclocking the gpu with the new vidia drivers cause im already getting that performance, plus it crashes at my old overclock settings?? So i just run default.

Ive been scorring right under 11k on 3dmark06 at 10900 points. When i get my new hybrid ssd harddrives in ill retake test and post scores! This old beast runs new games for under 300 bucks, beats buying a ps3! or a new thousand dollar gaming laptop...

I also had about 7 dead pixels on my 1920 hi def screen, ended up getting a q tip and massaging them all back to life, my screen is puurfect now muahaha!

Enjoy, although getting dated they are still fine machines. Still use my 7811 everyday and do not see replacing it any time soon. It does just what I need it to do.

Might want to do some research on raiding the xt's as I seem to recall they did not play well with each other in raid, but I'm kinda old and my rememory does not work so well at times. Lol

Enjoy, the possible reason for the crash at old settings is now that the drivers are well optimized they just draw too much power. This could be why the old drivers micro stuttered as they every 30 seconds or so slowed the GPU to either prevent crashing or data error and correction.

Also if you are happy with 1440x900 on a 17 inch then do it. The gaming will hold out longer at that res. If however you re happy running the game at 1440x900 with the current screen keep it as for desktop use 1920x1200 is awesome................

Yeah Andy! Oh the xt's hmm, ill check further into it. Oh and good to meet you tanware, your post have been helpful, alot of info.
Oh and thats the thing, the 1920 screen seems to skip the 1440x900 res, it goes from 1600x800 something to 1300x768. The 1600 res is still a little too taxing on new games to run high at 60 fps, and the 1300 res leaves more to be desired.
Then if u go back to the 16:10 ratios ur only options are 1920x1200 and 1200x1024. Im refering to the game tribes ascend by the way, this game seems to be my benchmark and burn test lol, gets my pc hotter than anything else.

So just wondering are the P-7811FX and P-7805FX same CPU upgrades or is one limited to how far in CPU upgrade?

About the only difference between the 7811 and the 7805 was the doubling of RAM for the video card, from 512 to 1GB and the reduction in screen resolution to 1440 x 900 although gateway did let a number of 7805's loose on the market that had the 1920 x 1200 screens. Other than that they are pretty much identical.

Tribes ascend wont let me enter a custom res, it always resets it to one of its own predefined resolutions when i try lol i did try right away tho thx.
Yeah for the guy upgrading cpu, get a t9600 for under 40 bucks and your doing great. Either that or the e8435 if your computer literate and can undervolt it, u can get one of these for under 40 bucks too, they are the same thing as t9900 3.0ghz. Those are your two smart options, if you want to spend 100 or lil more bucks get the x9100, im about to get one to overclock, beacause the cpu is this laptops bottleneck ive come to find out, over clocking a x9100 to 3.5ghz would be sweet

One other difference. The NB is an older version that is known to have a TSZ0 bug in higher end CPU's. While even the P7805 can have the TSZ0 report a false 99c with undervolting it usually clears up. There were others, especially x9100 C0 in P7811's, that reported false 99c at TSZ0. Now while the system was not truly overheating this would falsely place the CPU at a lower clock to cool off. The cure on both the P7811's and effected P7805's was to use RMClock or Throttle Stop to lock the CPU at the higher clock.

The 7805's are all 1GB the problem is the res.. The problem is they had to put a bunch together and apparently ran out of the budget 1440x900 screens. So they ended up putting some of the high res screens in there. The problem is the part number and even the box all point to it being 1440x900. It was a crap shoot but getting an early system was the best bet for a high res. screen.....................

LOL, so true, it was a crap shoot as to whether one got the 1920 x 1200 screen. Gateway had some issues at times of putting different parts in their machines than what was supposed to be spec and there was really no way to telling by looking at the box. I will say though it was usually to the customers advantage. A good example was the Gateway NV5927u back in 2010. It was supposed to have an I3 in It but they put I5's in them, plus they stuck bluray drives in them vs a DVD drive, at 499.99. Even the 7805's at best buy were down in the 500 range (a steal) to clearance them out.

Even the P79xx's were cleared out as well. The quad version never made it to the us though. All the P79's were late submissions as the next gen icores were available very shortly after the P79 release. Even the 260m of the new P79 was outdated by the time they were out...................

That price quoted if correct sounds reasonable for that old model of laptop. But you should find someone if possible that has similar model 7805 with the higher LCD resolution and see if they know the part number to cross to be sure that is compatible fit. But they could go higher as 100US depending on the quality and how new the LCD is also.

I have a 1900 x 1200 screen on mine, man do i love it. Got it from best buy 5 or 6 years ago, was the last one on the shelf. Has served me well for many years, although it had to be retired from gaming due to the dreaded black screen issue. Still works as an entertainment pc in my bedroom. Everything still functions as it did on day 1 (except for the 9800 GPU)
