NV5940u?

Hi all,

I am looking for a laptop for a friend, and I came across the NV5940u.

A few questions:
a) How does this laptop differ from the Gateway NV5924u, Gateway NV5925u, and Gateway NV5926u (those three only differ in color as I understand it, and I can only find the blue and black at online retailers, beige is nowhere to be found). The NV5940u says it has 20 minutes more battery life, but I can't find any other differences. Maybe I missed them?

b) Can you even buy this laptop? I can't find any place to purchase it.

c) Are there any good reviews on any of these models? They look great: i5 processor, 5650 ati card (1 gb dd3 ... is that ddr3 or gddr3? anyone know?), 500 gb hd (only 5400 rpm though), 4 gb ddr 1066 mhz ram. Resolution is pretty low (1366x768), but that should be OK.

d) Anyone know how the battery life stands up to the advertised 4+ hour claim? I'm guessing 2-3 hours assuming you aren't really trying to kill the machine.

e) How is gateway's quality now-a-days? I'm hearing that they've improved lately. I haven't personally used a gateway in ages.

(FYI, my goals were to find a 15'' machine around 5 lbs with around 4 hours battery life. It would need to have a decent discrete graphics card and a good new processor. Blu-ray would be icing on the cake, if possible. Sub-$1000 would be ideal, otherwise I'd just run over to clevo or something).

I cant see any differences either, nor find any places to buy it from.

I would think you would get at least 4hrs on the battery, dunno, it does look like its the same 6cell 4400mAh battery. But maybe the volts are more and is why you'd get a little more.

Havent really found any reviews, but havent really looked either. The Ram on the video card is GDDR3 running at 800mhz, core clock is 550(at least on the nv7901, so should be same on the 15"ers.)

Now is it just me, or are those great specs for an $800 laptop? Granted, screen resolution is not that great, but you do have an hdmi port. With that being the case, I'd think at lease someone out there would have reviewed one of these things.

 

Yeah, I'd say pretty awesome specs for 800 as well. If you order from J&R and use bing which should still be at 5%, you can even pay less(assuming you go with the nv5926 when back in stock) .

I'm surprised no reviews either, hope some pop up soon. Look for the 7901 review here, its good, and pretty much should all be the same stuff. I'm having a few probs with my nv7901, but considering the reviewer doesnt have them, I can only assume I just got bad luck(along with another poster in there too). I'm getting a replacement since I really like this laptop, so all is well. Just sucks to go without a laptop for another 1.5 to 2weeks.
