I have recently note some strange behavior on my notebook when running on the battery. I hadn't noted it before because I usually run on house power. When I turn the computer on under battery power, it acts like it's starting up, but then the screen goes black and it seems to be hung up. The power light is on but the computer is completely unresponsive. I have to power down and start it up when plugged in to house power. A similar thing happens if I attempt to shut down the computer when running under battery power. When I push the button to shut down, it acts like its shutting down, but then the screen goes black. The power light is on but the computer just sits there, hung up. I have to hold the power button down to force it to shut down. It does not appear to be a low battery problem. The battery charges up fine, and I can get about two hours of operation from it. Does anybody have a clue as to what's going on? Is this a hardware or a software problem?

Problem solved, thanks to Microsoft. After trying again to start up on battery, I just let the notebook sit. I noticed after a while that the hard drive was coming on and off. After about 10 minutes it rebooted on its own and the windows startup menu came up. I selected the last successful startup, and it started all over, and over, and over. I finally plugged in house power restarted. When Windows came up, I got a notice to report the problem to MS. When I did I got immediate feedback that my video driver was at fault and to reinstall. I installed the latest driver from Gateway and that fixed it. The notebook now starts up and closes under battery power.

That is strange. What video driver were you using previously? I fortunately haven't had any problems like that. I am having trouble with the laptop not waking up if I close it. Is there a keypress or something to wake it up? Sometimes it seems to work if I open and close it a couple times other times nothing. If I press the power button and then hit enter it will enter into standby mode and I can usually wake it up from that.

After much knashing of teeth and frustration, I've traced imy problem down to the NHC upgrade. It has that default Nvidea setting that seems to foul up the works. I finally figured out that you have to set the setting slider setting to medium (whatever that does). NHC needs much, much better documentation for us semi-computer literates.
