Hey just wondering if those of us using this cooler and other coolers power them via the laptop (usb) or get the wall adapter. I know some of my other notebooks seemed to suck alot of power out of the system when hooked up to them. But I was curious about this beast? :)

My roommate uses the Cryo on his Sager, and I use a Rosewill on my 7811. Both of us don't use the laptop USB to power the coolers.

My suggestion would be to use a USB hub that is wall powered. It's not hard on the laptop, and it gives you some more USB, which with the 7811 is very nice.

Heres the deal (I own one so I know first hand) -

The nzxt requires BOTH power from your computer through USB to USB, and power in the form of a DC input. The cooler comes with a USB to USB cable, and a USB to DC cable. Therefore, you plug both of the cables into your laptop, and the other sides of the cables into the cooler. You can also alternatively use your own (not included) AC to DC cable, and partly power the cooler from a wall plug using that, and this will draw less power from your laptop as well as make the cooler take up only one USB slot instead of 2 on your laptop. However, no matter what you do, you must have the USB to USB cable going from your laptop to the cooler in order to get sufficient power. The USB to USB cable is used for both data transfer (the cooler has 4 vacant USB ports for use) and for power transfer, and believe it or not, the cooler draws more power from the USB than it does from the DC input.

So to answer your question, it primarily needs to draw power through USB from your laptop, but to work at 100% efficiency, needs to use a DC input as well, whether from your laptop or from a wallplug.

Your roommate might not have realized but he will see a HUGE increase in fan speed if he connects his laptop to his cooler through USB to USB. I don't know why he wouldnt want to anyway, as this would give him extra USB ports to use.

Thanks for the tip. He just runs his into a hub. So its like a hub off a hub, which I laughed about anyway. I wish my Rosewill had some usb ports!

Can anyone tell me-- Does the Cryo force air upwards toward the computer, or does it pull it downwards? From what I've heard, coolers that pull air downwards are bad for a 7811.

It blows air up toward the underside of the laptop. I've heard some people received units where the fans were installed reversed, but it's easy to change out yourself with a philips head screwdriver. I know, because I manually checked each of the fans on my Cryo.

The USB "wall wart" power supplies can vary in output; the lowest will barely get the fans spinning; I'm using one with a 2.6 amp output that will spin the fans so fast I get a noticeable breeze of warm air coming up through the keyboard when I turn them all the way up.

Jakamo does it seem to draw so much power from the laptop that it hurts performance at all??? That was a complaint I had from a previous laptop and why I switched to a DC wall adaptor? Sorry for the delay in response as I was out of town

PS Love the House Lag logo, but I cant help but think of Hugh Laurie back in the Black Adder days

nope no change in performance for me. external hard drives probably take more power than the cryo does from the USB, and a lot of people keep those plugged in 24/7. However, I know one person had a power problem: check this thread -

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=298928

However, I haven't seen that problem duplicated. As I said in that thread, I used to run both USB and DC power from my laptop (now I have the dc connected to the wall adapter instead of my laptop) and at the same time I had my ipod charging, external HDD in use, and a printer running out of the Cryo's USB ports and still had 0 power issues, 0 drop in performance (even the HDD read and wrote at the same speed), 0 warnings.
