So I bought this netbook a couple of months ago and planned on doing a clean install but it's much more harder/difficult/confusing than I thought. With my dell, I was fortunate to have a dell tech walk me through everything step by step. Not so much with Gateway tech. The moron kept telling me to reinstall my driveres for my webcam BEFORE I had even started my clean install. I finally asked him if he was actaully a technician b/c he was completely worthless. I made my 3 recovery discs and I THINK he started me on the right path. He said put my 1st disc in and press F10 until it asks me how I want to boot up my disc. I do have an external hard drive. But the one thing I don't want to do is screw up the order that I'm supposed to install the different drivers and software. With my dell, there was a very specific order in installing everything and the gateway guy had no idea what to tell me.. I've researched a ton and all I find is people saying to us a bootable usb drive but I don't need to do that since I have the an external hard drive. I also made a back up disc of all the drivers and what not. So far what I have for steps is

1.start up my 1st recovery disc and press F10 and then boot up the program

    thanks for your help.

    2. Arrow down to your CD drive when it's displayed.
    3. Hit "Enter"
    4. Follow the instructions

This will erase your entire hard drive and reformat it, so save your personal documents beforehand. The process takes a LONG time too, like 2 1/2 hours.

On my NV 78, it wasn't what I'd call a true "clean install". It reinstalled all the bloatware and free trial offers. I was hoping it would just install Windows 7 only, but no such luck.

If anyone knows how do use these discs to do a Windows-only install, please let me know, because I'm definitely interested.

See tha'ts what I'm afraid of as well. When I asked the gateway "tech", of course, he had no clue. I don't want to spend 3 hours reinstalling my windows ONLY to find out, it reinstalled everything back onto my netbook. I just want windows 7 plus the essential drivers and software to use my web cam, get on line, graphics card and what not. Can anyone chime in if they know this would be the case if I did reinstall it according to the instructions?

For those in the know, can we order a windows 7 cd from gateway, even though it's already installed on my netbook? It says that you can upgrade if you have vista but thought it'd be nice to have a legitimate back up.

thanks for the quicf response but I don't have vista on my netbook. It already has windows 7 home premium but wanted to know if I could order a windows 7 disc b/c on the order page it only says that people with vista can order.

No you cannot order that since new laptops are preinstalled with windows 7 oem version which means you dont pay extra for the OS thats preinstalled or the price you pay includes the OS too. The disadvantage being you have to install the crapware as well whenever you do a clean installation. The link i gave you explains how to do a clean installation without the crapware using the same OEm discs that you have. The one i gave is for Vista which i know. But if you google you will be able to find the same for Windows 7. Whatever way you do, do it the right (legal) way.
