So when I bought this FX laptop in 2009 I didn't back up the pc (yeah, dumb move) and then when I updated to windows 7, I only got the upgrade version and I didn't write down the Windows Vista key since it was on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Fast forward to now and I would like to reinstall windows to a new SSD (I used Paragon OS transfer and it's been working great, but want to see if fresh install will increase speed) but since I only bought the windows 7 upgrade, I need to install Windows Vista first, but the sticker on the laptop has faded to the point that it can't be read anymore. I tried various programs to get the key but only Windows 7 one shows up. I can see the PQservice partition when I use Easus partition program and am wondering if there is a way to extract the key from the vista back up? Or do I need to contact Microsoft? Any ideas?

Okay, guess there is no way to get it. Will probably get a Windows Home Premium Full version and use that for the SSD. Mods, please close thread.

Pelenor you can do a clean install with the win 7 upgrade disk, no need to buy the full version. There are directions on how to do this in the link I posted. You will not need your old Vista key to do this.

Thanks, Andy! Now that I actually read the link! But one question, would a clean install make a speed difference?

It can, according to how much junk is loaded from your present install. Once thing about SSDs is no matter where the data is it "SHOULD" all .load up at the same speed. So even a current install cleaned up to bare minimum loading the same files and drivers etc as a clean install will be just as fast. Only big difference may be if the registry is bloated.

Well, re installed windows and spent two days updating windows and reinstalling my programs. Gotta say, fours years and this laptop (7805u) is running great and still doing what I need for it to do. I only increased Ram to8 gigs, added a blue ray player and SSD. I am very satisfied with how long the laptop has lasted. I played around with getting a new battery but I can still get at least an hour and a half or so out of it. I think the final upgrade will be to get a T9600 cpu but I may wait. Over all, thanks to all the suggestions and I wish Acer?gateway would resurrect these laptops cause they are truly great!
