Whenever i play some games, my laptop shuts itself off, no doubt a failsafe function to prevent damage to components, heres the things ive noticed before and while these things started happening, the orange exhaust fan on the left side of the laptop( 6831 and 6860 users should understand) has thoroughly decreased in terms of blowing out hot air, it used to blow out at a considerably hard speed, now its barely a hot breeze. Also i have a friend with this same laptop, his CPU idles at around 45 while mines is idling in the low 60s.
I called gateway and they just keep telling me i have to system restore, first, but i think this is clearly a hardware issue.
And this is affecting my game performance extremely I.E. assassins creed, my friend averages 30-40, i average 15-20.
Does anyone have any suggestions to help this case?

The left fan is the fan for the GPU and the rear is for the CPU. I would take some compressed air and blow out both vents and see if that helps. If not, you may have a fan problem. And the reason for poor gaming performance is most likely the system throttling itself to prevent damage.

Try the simple steps first. Get some canned air and clean out your system. If the fan is still working it might be excessive build up causing the temps to jump. You should not be idling at 60deg+ with a stock CPU (and even the X7800 and x9000 dont idle that high)

If the canned air doesnt help then you might have the cooling system going bad. The fans themselves might be slowly dying. I hope this isnt the case though and the air should work.

But its weird that you mention the GPU fan not blowing air, but its your CPU thats running hot. Are you running HWMoniter? if so can you give the temps?

    EDIT:
Curse you Dook, i now look like a repeat answerer due to having to feed and change the baby. But such is the fun of fatherhood i guess :p

The reason his GPU fan doesn't seem to be blowing air is because the CPU fan, running hot, is cranking up the fan speed on that fan. The GPU, running cooler, does not need to turn up the fan, so comparatively, it feels like nothing.

Yeah I didn't want to derail the thread but I am so glad I don't have kids, so I can work on more important things like building ITG machines, improving my laptop, and posting on forums.

Remember what I said about Child Protection Services?

Did you upgrade your CPU? If you did, it might be the thermal paste.

Also, what are the temps for your GPU?

Nah kids are great. My daughter is WAY more interesting that Crysis. Its truly amazing the amount of stuff she can get into in the space of 30 seconds.

Plus I'm studying her because I'm convinced shes powered by a 900cell battery and when she grows out of it I'm taking it for my laptop. :D

But thats enough thread derailing due to proud daddyness ;)

I got a stock p-6831 and my cpu HWMoniter temps idles at 42c. Sumthin aint right with yer rig. I hope it aint serious. Try the compressed air first, like Kajin Majere suggested.

Actually 42 is about right. Anything from 39-45 is pretty normal for the t5500-t5750 CPU's The t8300 and t9300 idle at the same or lower temps because they are a much more efficient chips.

Though keeping your system clean is never a bad thing so give the can of air a whirl and see what happens. It cant hurt if nothing else.

those are what i was experiencing before...have you taken it apart recently? if so i suggest taking off the heatsink, applying a new thermal paste, but just on the parts that touch the heat sink, nothing else, and then bolt it down tight and try it again. See if your fan is working aswell and blow out the vents. My x7800 idles between 38 and 44c so there is something wrong there.

Wow those temps are pretty high for idle. You sure your not running Orthos in the back ground :p j/k

How old is the laptop? I still stand by the dust issue. With the tight spaces even a little dust that a desktop will ignore can cause us serious problems.

If its not dust its more than likly going to be components of your cooling system not working correctly. (Heat sinks and fans)

Even your HD temps are about 8 degrees to hot

what version of HWmonitor do you have? 1.10 or an older one? i remember having an older version of HWmonitor that would display idle temps of 61C on my x205, and then i got the newest version and it then started reading the temps correctly. i had about a 43C idle on my x205.

your temps seems too high for untidy desk/dust issues

50 is a bit high for a t8300, but the 15in notebook could explain that.

Have you tried to under volt it? That should knock quite a few degrees off the temp. I was honestly amazed how well that works. I shaved 13ish degrees average off the temps of the t5600 and the t8300 is a more efficient chip so you should be able to get around those numbers

You guys are posting some really good numbers with the x7800. Are they stock 2.6gHz or the 3.0gHz numbers? If they are @3.0 then screw the x9000 i'd buy the x7800 due to the 150 saving there!

mine is stock at 2.6, i have not been able to UV while OCing yet, but the other X7800 broskis have. I have undervolted from 1.3 to 1.1375 at stock, dropping my temps from max 88C to about 73C right now, which is awesome.

I'm running at 3ghz and UV'd to 1.212V with max temps of 75C and really couldn't be happier. I wanted to wait a week or so before I wholeheartedly recommended this processor, but so far I see no reason to spend the extra money on the X9000. Sure you get 2MB more cache and it runs a bit cooler, but for the money, I gotta say, this is hard to beat.

Ok i got the UVing while OCing working, im at 3.0 right now, its @ 1.225 and will not go lower. Its maxing at 87C. I think I will dorp to 2.8 and see what can happen. Seems like a good median to me.

how are you guys undervolting when OCed, its not rele working lol...it has own set values. It claims at 2.8 it needs 1.2124, so i cant UV past that.

edit:NVM figured it out, @2.8 UVed to 1.17 right now :)

I sent mine in and it took a Month and Half for them to service it, ***?

It bassicly sat on their shelves doing nothing like they forgot about it.. I kept calling then they eventuall sent me through to the depeartment that actually does the work... I *****ed and moaned a little... I was like What if this take another month, its eating my warrenty time! etc. She said it wouldn't take that long..... About a week 1/2 later it was sent out......... I have a fealing my mine just got lost in the system. Bah, not happy.

Anyways they replaced my motherboard & my heat issues have been good and I'm getting about 50more points on 3d Mark 06...

It use to always kick on the fans pretty loudly trying to make up for the heat it was running. Even when I was just surfing the web, not gaming... I would recomended anyone sending their laptop in because its probally something more serious then general fix it stuff
    ------------
I was still getting massive ammounts of air out the left side. It did run in the 60s also idling.
