Hey there guys i want to install windows 7 on my P-7805u and need your expert opinion on this. I used this guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=295516 to install xp and this guide http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm to dual boot it with Vista. Now that Windows 7 is out i want to replace Vista with it but still want to keep my windows xp. So this is what i need help with. What would i have to do to install windows 7 over Vista and still be able to dual boot with Xp.

And i would really appreciate it if someone could point me to where i could find the drivers to install Windows 7 on P-7805u. Any help is appreciated...thanks!

    its quite simple.

    1. get windows 7
    2. boot you computer from cd.
    3. follow the onscreen instructions until it asks about partitions
:you can format the drive, or split it for dual boot from here
    4. Once it installs most things should work.
    5. For the things that dont, go to gateways website, and go to the driver section for your model, look for windows 7 drivers, if there are non, then download the vista ones, they will be compatable. I have had no problems with my laptop

    although mines is the 6860

The link you posted is for having VISTA installed first.

If you want to keep your existing XP installation, you should be following their guide for having XP installed first.

stephen0205 is correct on everything except for #3, if he wants to keep his existing XP partition then all he will have to do is delete the Vista partition, and install 7 into the newly unallocated space. Formatting\splitting is unnecessary, the drive should be already split into multiple partitions and 7 will format the drive automatically before installing.

Then follow this guide to modify the bootloader to customize and perfect your dual-boot system. http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_xp__stepbystep_guide_with_screenshots.htm?page=5

XP and 7 is nice, I had that combo on my P7801 when I first got it. You can also use vlite and read up on their forum for help to customize your 7 installation. I definitely recommend that if you have the time, it will be much faster and you will be much happier.

If its the Vista os that came with the computer the only thing you loose is the easy access to your recovery partition.

Install in whatever order if you use EasyBCD.

If you had the drivers in Vista they'll be there in Win 7. Just upgraded to 7 a few days ago and everything was fine. Go here for stock drivers for the 9800 tho: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_win7_x64_186.03_whql.html

The Vista drivers had me running at 60° idle

    good luck

The only way I found was to use UBCD or UBCD4win. Just dont delete that partition or at least make a ghost image/ clone.

Oh yeah def agree because its been around longer, better support, but its a great idea. Im hoping that with the install of xpm it uninstalls all the legacy software(compatibility to older stuff) frees the kernel and makes w7 even lighter. Thats hoping.

You forgot the most important part, it's faster :)

Also has a dynamically expanding virtual hard drive.

XP-mode looks the same as Virtual-PC, and since it's coming from Microsoft I'd say that's a safe bet.
