Just picked up my 6831 at Best Buy- very excited to get this thing powered up!
I picked up BB's 3 year warranty for $250- is this a good move? I did not get the $350 Accidental Insurance for 3 years.
Any opinions on this? I have 14 days to either return it or upgrade-
Thanks!!

Go for the 3yr Accidental. I enjoy being able to "drop" it down stairs for fun.

If you have USAA insurance, you can get computer insurence for $8.00 per year, covers $3,000.00
 -

How do I get USAA insurance- what is it?
 -

It is Home, Car, property insurance, you must be in the military or have family in the military to get it, they have very good rates too.

Oh well- I guess that is out of the question - no immediate family in military- so which Best Buy insurance should it be?
      -

congrat!and yeah take the other warranty!
 -

I agree, the accidental insurance is always good for a Laptop, more so for a Gaming Laptop, Lan Party!
go with the Geek Squad
      -

Is it worth the extra $350? It goes against my nature to pay for something like this hehe -
 -

The best buy warrenty sould be a total of $399.99 or so not more, thats everything
 -

Yes, it covers ever thing (hardware) BUT full liquid submersion and "acts of god". <---Policy actually says that.
 -

LOL, if I drop it in my pool, I will use a hairdryer before taking it in
      -

Is it really worth almost 1/3rd of the cost of the laptop though?
 -

its the piece of mind you get with buying the insurance. I say its worth it. I picked up the accidental insurance. When I got my dSLR from best buy I got the accidental insurance with it as well. The camera ended up falling one day damaging the lens. Best Buy took it in and sent it out for repairs. Money well spent if you asked me.
 -

If it where a desktop I would say no, buy Its a laptop, and a big one at that, if you drop it, and no warrenty, your out $1399.00 or $1149.99

Don't forget the free battery replacement too. It's well worth it on any laptop.
      -

thats a good point, my bb gateways warrenty ends this month, I have two backup batteries
      -

Get the free AcAdaptor as well while your at it flynnaz.
 -

You can get a Two year extension on your warranty (basically three years) directly through Gateway for about $150.
 -

DanteDrac, how do I get the free AcAdaptor? I bet it will work with my P-171x fx too
      -

I just got accidental for one year. They guy said before the year expires, I can go in and pay another 99$ for a new year.

I hate saying it, but he was wrong. The 99 dollar ADH service plan is NOT extendable. Only the 2 and 3 year plans. Go return it for the better one and tell his sup or manager about that. That is a training issue that needs to be resolved ASAP for customer's, like you, sake. -

uh oh...thanks for telling me. is it the 2 and 3 year accidental plans only? or the comprehensive damage one?
 -

With the bby warranty you also get a acadaptor replacement. Same way you get the battery. Call 888-bestbuy part search, etc, etc.
 -

DanteDrac, thank you, so I just call the BB number, and tell them I need a AC Adaptor?
 -

Yes, so long as you are still under any BBY PSP for a laptop you are "entitled" to a no questions asked battery and acadaptor. (Tell them it broke or some thing.)
 -

Meh, I didn't get any extra warranty; I feel that by the time the 1 year one's done, the value of the laptop is around $1000 to me, pointless to pay 10-30% for a peace of mind.
 -

yea then sell it lolll.
 -

Dantedrac, thank you, just ordered my ac adapter
it will be at my door in 5 days.
      -

so when you guys order those things, you need the full warranty right? not just the accidental one?
 -

The Best Buy Warrenty is all in one. full warranty and accidental together.

The two or three year plans, not the one year. -

Alright wait a minute, now, if I just bought this laptop, but plan to upgrade the monitor, ram, and processor, doesn't that just void any of these warranties? Or will that cover me if I mess up doing the DIY upgrades?
 -

I would keep the extra parts handy and put them back in before sending it out to service. (BBY or Gateway warranty service)
Technically, Gateway's warranty states that if damage is determined to be caused BY the upgrades...the warranty is void. But, otherwise, it's covered. They also don't explicitly state what you can and can not upgrade, so lets just assume processor/RAM/hard drive.
As far as Best Buy, any upgrade you do can potentially void the warranty, it depends on what tech you get. To be safe, I would put the original parts back in. -

Has anyone ever tried something like that? If I were to do one of these upgrades after paying for that warranty, and then drop my laptop, put the old parts back in, and bring it to BB, wouldn't they be able to somehow check that it had been changed at one time or another? And then I would be out of my $400 warranty

I think you will be ok, I have a Gateway 7624x, and I have upgraded the ram, even on the inside, the one they say cant be upgraded, and have had no problems, I have took it in twice since on different issues, no problems. If your upgrade causes the problem then maybe you may have a problem. I really would not worry about it. Keep the old parts, if you need to take it in, replace the upgraded parts take it in you should have no problems.
 -

Screw the extra 6831 warranty! I'll stick with the 1 year factory warranty.
It is a statistical fact that the majority of warranties are not used. I'm willing to take the gamble.
I'll put those funds towards a new Penryn CPU (T9500 or X9000). -

Sounds good, before your warrenty is up, get your free battery
      -
That's been my experience as well. Since I've already replaced CPU/Memory/HDD's already, and will likely replace the LCD and DVD +RW, it doesn't make much sense since I've voided any manufacturer warranty anyway, and likely the extended unless I'm willing to swap everything back later in case of an issue.
I'd rather sell the spare parts now, pocket the warranty money, depend on the individual warranties of the parts I've replaced, and deal with issues later if I have them (or even keep it beyond a year or two). -

You do not get a free battery with the MFGW, only a BestBuy PSP.
 -

Few things:
1. Upgrading the RAM does not void the warranty on the machine. Upgrading the processor and monitor will.
2. The Best Buy PSP does not get you a free battery. It only gets you a replacement if yours dies within the warranty period. Do not make it sound like you get an extra battery by purchasing the plan. -

Thats EXACTLY how I feel. I just treat my laptop like one of my kids. I've done a good job not dropping any of them and they don't even have a nice messenger bag that I can stuff them in.
 -

Hey so then you guys are sure that the new penryns fit into the p-6831fx mobo? I'm looking to do that upgrade as soon as they start getting in stock
 -

Maybe it's just me, but you make it sound like you stuff your kids in nice messenger bags.
Let me remind you that messenger bags, although nice, are not for kid-stuffing-in purposes. -

Lithus, The salesperson at Bestbuy sold the warrenty that way too me. " You get a battery once a year during your warrenty" I have recieved 3 batteries in three years, no questions asked. I am not takeing avantage, I am using what was sold to me, and I use my laptop more than most to justify it. I also called last weekend and recieved a new ac adapter today, all under the Best Buy warrenty. I piad $299.00 at the time for it, and I see no problem in getting my moneys worth from it.
 -

so you could get a power adapter through BB and gateway warranty??
 -

only if you are having problems, you need to call the 1800 number
 -

They are "suppose" to be replacements for none working batterys/acadaptors, BUT we as a company DO market it that you get a 2nd battery no questions asked. We even have a bit of paper listing the normal cost of a battery if you had to buy one vs. just getting our PSP.
 -

I understand, but how as a customer am I suppost to know that when I am told diffrently, and it is reinforced with how they have taken care of me since. I have een treated well by Best Buy.
 -

Oh no your good man. I sell PSP's like that as well. It is literally in the training we do.
"Price for a battery from the maker is going to cost more than our 99$ ADH" "So get at least that." etc etc
