anybody know when/if Gateway is updating the FX series as of recent(9/30/08)? im thinking of getting a 7811 but i dont want to buy it if it is being replaced any time soon. i was reeeeaaalllyy disappointed when i bought my 6860, then a week later the 7811 came outanyone know?
-
i would have taken that right back and got the newer one.. you we're with in your 14 day exchange/return phase. that is....if it was really a week. -
it was a week. however, i didn't find it 'til about 2 weeks later when i went back on to see if the price had changed, and i didn't think it was worth it......
i didnt read the specs closely enough i guess.....
-
go back to the store and ask them if you can exchange. allot of the time, you cant get your money back after 14 days, but they are more inclined to let you exchange or upgrade. (usually 14 to 30 days) you may have to pay a difference, you may not. although i would go find out. let them know you wanted the newer model. (which is the truth) and volunteer to pay a difference if you have too. which if you try right now...you should be able to beat the difference cost. -
hmmmmm... thanks, sound like a good idea! i'll give it a shot. tyvm for the advice! now why didn't i think of that myself.............
-
would i need the receipt you think?
-
it took me a few store visit's long ago to find that out myself....lol
just be nice and understanding...and if one doesn't work try a few more...only thing your losing is time and gas, but will be worth it if they exchange. -
this just keeps getting better and better....*L*
yes, you will need the receipt. or you can get lucky and have them check it against the credit card.(speculation of course) -
coming back to my original subject....... does anyone know if there is going to be an update for the FX Laptops, just out of curiosity?
-
of course there will be....but the real question is.....when. packard bell has the ipower gx coming out, which is an upgraded 7811fx. so it's just a matter of time before gateway jumps on board......
flipside
with all these returns people are doing on the fx line of notebooks...they may just say to he.ll with it and drop it completely. with that many returns...i might drop a line of notebooks as well.... so who knows... -
the title of this thread is going to scare a lot of 7811 owners
-
lol did it scare u? and johnksss, what do the specs look like for the ipower gx, and what's the price range?(in US $$$)
-
1499 euros convert to 2,114.54 USD -
Quad core must be coming soon (next 4 weeks) - same timeframe as Europe. But it will cost almost double.
-
I'm hoping Gateway picks up the iPower GX, but that quad-core CPU is going to push the price up considerably - $1250 was a bargain, but $2100 is not.
I also hope Gateway distinguishes this with a different model number. I have the gut feeling though with all the returns and problems the 7811FX has generated Gateway may pull the 7811FX overnight and replace it with the iPower GX version. It would seem logical for Gateway in my mind to do this for several reasons. Firstly, it would replace the entire guts of the machine with a new CPU, GPU, mobo, bios and other improvements. Gateway wouldn't need to bother with RMA's and upgrades for the old machine, and it would let them work around the design flaws of the 7811FX.
Those current owners already with a P-7811FX may indeed be scared a little, but those like me who have gone through hell and back with 5 bad units and are still waiting, this is pretty good news! -
This is the exact same machine sold in a euro centric configuration with a euro price -
is there going to be a replacement for the 6864FX?
its gone from the gateway site completely.
^^sure hope there is! -
-
yeah, he got me with that one....*LOL*
i was trying to hunt down one of them ipower gx laptops.
retail q9100
1 gig video memory
bluetooth
bluray rom (speculation of course)
1066mhz ram upgrade about to 8 gigs
im gonna have to say...it's looking like a pretty dammn good bargain to me.
the chip alone is 1k -
Even so, I remember reading a "starting price" of around 850. Once AMD releases its quad-core mobile chips, even though they won't compete with the mobile C2Qs in performance, I can see Intel dropping the price more since they'll no longer have exclusivity for quads in a mobile platform.
Just knowing I have the option (FOR ONCE) to upgrade my chip to something better down the road is nice. My XPS Gen 2 couldn't use Yonah even though the pins remained the same (Intel rearranged them), and my M1710 couldn't use the first-gen mobile Penryns - though the T7600G chip still isn't something to sneeze at. -
a retail x9000 and x9100 still retail about 1k. not an "ebay es chip"
and not a whole lot of people own a "retail oem" version extreme chip.(bought from a store and not through a notebook bought from a retailer)
and intel said the same for those chips as well, remember. -
that's because your dell is a memron. even numbers 7600/7400/7200 and so forth... everyone else was penryns or odd numbers. the penryn systmes could run either chip, where the memron could only run memron. (speculation of course) -
The only thing keeping the 7811fx from perfection is no MXM.
But I can live with that as adding it would necessitate making it thicker. I find this form factor very portable for what you get. -
Ya it certainly does look good!!!!! i wouldn't mind spending the extra 600ish bucks for a new CPU, 1 GIG GPU, BluRay, and Bluetooth. Especially when it is a mobile Quad-Core CPU! also, if this lappy is coming out October, the Quads must also be out by then? or at least somewhere near there...... anyone know when they're releaseing them? -
This CPU Q9100 is compatible with 7811FX?
-
but we are confident it will. -
-
-
the bios update I saw has mentions some Q series chip support
-
you mean the qx9300.
-
Yeah I mean QX9300 my bad -
i never heard of intel going to ship mobile quad in volume this quarter.
besides a 45-55 tdp cpu just too much for a 120w notebook.
even sager np5796 dont have q series in it. -
http://www.google.com/products?q=qx9300&btnG=Search&show=dd
qx9300
q9100
x9100
got my people on hunting them down now, but none are available. and them sites you see on the web. they dont have them either. i called and emailed the ones faking like they had it. *LOL*
answer... it's back ordered or pre-order now.
as for sager...
it's only because the chip isn't really out yet...but im sure they will jump on board, sager tends to try and stay on the cutting edge since they pretty much own the gaming realm. -
-
3ghz quad core
Dual Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTX Graphics with 1GB DDR3
8gb ddr2
500gb x3 5400rpm HD's (1.5tb!?!?)
lol, i think that config would giggle at how easy crysis would be on max
but wow, i wish i had 4500$ laying around -
it's the upgrade to a 7811fx any thing in the states. that mother board will fit in your laptop. (speculation of course)
indeed! but you can start with the basic config and upgrade when funds become available. -
two mobile quad has been out since 8/24. -
takes 30 days to get, well into November. go try to get one from dell. all i did was add the chip. ship date is 10-30-08
and as far as 8/24<----sorry, but that was pre order.
quads were not released yet to the public for buying. unless of course your buying 1000 of them, which i don't think you are. -
HP will get you a HDX18 with qx9300 in two weeks. Nice machine, but crap graphics card...
-
-
Will we be able to get the IPower GX in the states at all?
-
You wouldn't want it. Packard Bell doesn't have a support network over here, I don't think.
-
ummm ya. i would want it. it looks pretty amazing! if u have any other suggestions for this price range, i'm open...... no stinky support is not gonna stop me!!!! =}
-
It's not stinky support, man. It's *nonexistent* support within the US.
Don't believe me? http://www.packardbell.com/support.htm
See "United States" on that list? Or even Canada? Because I sure don't. -
not what i meant; "stinky." What I meant is, i'm not that bothered by that fact, if it means saving a heck of a lot of money on a pretty sweet lappy.
-
so what if it doesn't say united states there?can't you just click uk and have plenty of support!?...i mean drivers and such, things you can easily download.....
-
Until your notebook died...
-
The point they're getting at isn't related to software and drivers, but the fact that if you run into any hardware issues of any kind, you're out of luck.
You mention that one of the reasons this seems like a great deal is because of the price. You're only taking the initial purchase into consideration. Now given, some people may buy a laptop and use it for years and never experience a single issue. But what if something DOES go wrong?
Sure you might be able to get warranty work if you're willing to ship the laptop to them, but then you're paying for insured international shipping both ways (I can't imagine they'd foot any of that bill).
If you just have a dead hard drive or defective ram, that's easy and mostly inexpensive to replace. But what if the CPU dies? Expensive, but probably user replaceable. What about the GPU? If it's soldered to the motherboard, then you have to try to replace the whole motherboard. I can't imagine that's cheap.
With all of those costs in mind, wouldn't it just be easier to spend a little extra and get a Clevo based laptop (Sager, Eurocom, Prostar)? -
There will be a Gateway version. Right now they only have one new FX notebook. The line is a success so there will be more.
They need to fill the high end slot. $2500-3000.
IMO -
now where did u hear that?
New Gateway FX Lappys?
