I hope one of you can help me. I acquired a Gateway NE56R41u laptop yesterday and am pretty happy with it. There is one issue. Plugging in the AC power cord shows the small battery icon as charging for only 30 seconds. Hovering over it says "41% Available. Plugged in, Charging" Unfortunately, it's not charging and the % has actually dropped. Apparently this is a widespread problem but no one has a solution that works for me.

Several posters on other sites said to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery. I did that but it didn't help.

For what it's worth, the battery case is extremely difficult to open and requires a screwdriver to pry it open.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

So what do you mean acquire and how old is that laptop? If it is old the battery could be on it's last leg of journey and should be replaced. I don't know yours but you shouldn't have to use a screw driver to pry it open that could mean it's the wrong battery in there to begin with and the charging state also is a indication that the battery no longer can take a full charge meaning bad battery and should be replaced. If your system still works with power plugged in that would mean that power connection is working as it should. But my money is a bad battery or wrong battery and should be replaced and a screw driver shouldn't have to be used to get the battery out.

It's a newly refurbished machine from Gateway that I got as part of the eMachine class action suit. It's only been out of the box 24 hours. I inserted the battery properly. It's just a very snug fit but does lock in place.

I'm told it has a new 90 day warranty. I'm still trying to get in touch with customer support but was hoping someone had a simple solution.

One site suggested updating the BIOS. Shouldn't it have shipped with the latest? Anyhow, there's a bewildering list of update options on this site and then click on BIOS. What the heck is UEFI? Should I try this if I can't get Gateway to respond? If so, which one?

That is the new replacement for the old BIOS UEFI allows to make windows update to the BIOS aka UEFI. Just cause you got refurbished that doesn't mean the UEFI is updated. Use your serial number on gateway site and see what the UEFI firmware is updated to and if you you need to update to fix any firmware updates. But should it fail to charge or get a replacement battery from Gateway to try again and if that doesn't work that would mean there are more problems board related and a replacement laptop is in order for RMA.

    Thanks for the feedback!

They're sending me a call tag to exchange the unit.

ok good to hear but don't wait should the problem persists...refurbished is suppose to mean they fixed the problems not cause more...

Hello, I am having the same problem as you.
I was part of the class action suit as well and purchased this laptop on Aug 21st.

I called the warranty support line (1-877-330-6820), told them that my NE56R41u is saying "Plugged in and not charging" and they shipped a new battery.
Same problem with the replacement battery.
Called warranty back and just started a repair/replacement claim today.

Looks like I'll have to send it in for repair :(
Luckily, they are sending me a prepaid shipping label.

I was curious if you have resolved this issue yet?

    Thanks!
