Hi guys, today I just bought a Gateway notebook unknown model name. I bought it for $30 so I can't complain but hopefully we can get my issues worked out !
My big issue is after maybe 10 mins of it being on a blue screen with white words pops up and then it shuts off all on its on and restarts. So I had to go do something so I closed it and walked away for a 15 mins or so and when I opened it the screen was there so now I can read it. Word for word what it says:
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a drvier is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000008e (0xC0000005, 0x804FA379, 0xF1B81A9C, 0x00000000)

    Beginnning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administator or technical support group for further assitance.

Thats what the blue screen says. Luckily I opened it up and it didnt leave so I can type down what Im getting. So now that, that problem is stated Im going to restart and list to you guys what pops up once I turn it on.

First - RUNDLL (left hand of the box) - Big red X then - Error loading C:/Program Files/Arcade Web/arcadeweb32.dll the specified module could not be found.

Second - Micrsoft Windows (left hand side of box) - The system has recovered from serious error. It's one of those Send Error Report or Don't Send.

Third- Norton Internet Security (left hand side of box) - Action Required- Norton Internet Security has detected threats that require your attention. - Risk, Low, Title, Adware.Hotbar has been detected, Status Not fixed

So those are 3 things that pop up and it went blue screen twice while I typing all that stuff in here. Now for the order of the pop ups the second will only come up after the blue screen occurs then it restarts.

Please guys HELP !! If I could get this thing set back to like how it was out of the box great ! I need none of the info on this notebook !!
    Thanks

    Hi,
you could initially do a clean install of your preferred OS and then come back to us in case of any errors.

Also, do the obligatory fan-cleaning and check for your temps (perhaps using the CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting)

if you could find the model, that would be a nice plus since there are some issues per model that are common to appear.

    good luck

I have to ask, if you are so new that you have to ask what an OS is why have you decided to tackle a project where someone else, most likely with more experience, has given up to the point they dumped the hardware for $30.00?

I am not trying to be mean but you will need someone with some experience working on hardware and software to do this for you................

My fault when I posted that I wasn't thinking lol ok OS= operating System.
    Model = LT2016U
    MFG. date = 1004
I have a buddy helping me and so far I have run
Glary Utuilities. It cleaned out 509 threats and 175 mb of un needed space
AVG 2013, it found 3 viruses all being Trojan horse backdoor, it cleared 2 of them no problem the other laughed at it.
He now wants me to try and run OTL but now I cannot get on the internet far enough to even run it so thats where Im at now.
Just figured I'd post what's going on and if you guys have any suggestions ? I think next were gonna try and install a new OS but idk ? Maybe try and get away with using new user account but I have doubts about that working.
P.S. I got $20 back from the person so this is now only a $10 investment. :D

If it were me I would wipe and reinstall the operating system, especially since you have found so many threats. I just would not trust it. It should have an EISA configured partition on the hard drive where the original OS is located. To check and see if the EISA partition is still on the hard drive go to administrative tools, computer management, disk management. It should be possible to boot from that partition (during BIOS post) and reinstall the original OS, if the option is not available try making a set of recovery discs by using the Gateway Recovery Management usually located in Programs, Gateway, Gateway Recovery Management. If the EISA partition has been erased or removed you are out of luck unless you have a copy of XP home OEM and can then use the key usually located on the bottom of the machine or inside the battery compartment to reinstall.

Well went into the Gatewaty recorvery went to restore to factory default settings clicked through verify'ing I knew it was gonna erase all the pics, ect. Well after that it would go back to the original restore to factory defualt settings screen then a little bit later it would just shut down. So that virus wiped that out as well.
Seems as though my only option I have left is buy a USB CD rom get the windows cd and all the drivers ?
So I'm gonna be searching for another one I guess and maybe I'll just slowly gather up the stuff to fix this one also.
What are the good brands and the ones to stay away from?? All I will be using it for is internet (forums and stuff like that), uploading youtube vids, editing youtube vids, and watching youtube.

Stay away from Acer pre 2007. I've had issues with three in one year. Spent a great deal of frustration swapping out the ACER I bought before Iraq. Had to swap it out twice before finally just selling the piece of crap. HPs are alright, Dell is Ok, older Gateways are ok (note: Acer acquired gateway in 2007 but didn't implement hardware changes until 2009, by then, the Foxconn MB capacitor issue had already been fixed). The HP Pavillion series runs a bit hot for my taste and the XPS systems look spiffy but are underpowered. Can't go wrong with a Gateway p7805 or 79xx though.

Although only watching videos, editing, etc; your laptop is going to run a bit slow. You can pick up a new Sata drive from ebay cheap, reinstall the OS via bootable image on a USB drive and dump it on ebay for $100 - $60 profit. Take that bill and a bit of extra cash and you should be able to pick up an FX series for a few hundred on Craigslist.

    Just my opinion...
