Do you know if Gateway has or will offer any extended battery options for this laptop? If they do, what would be the max battery life?

    Thanks

I would like to know what the name of the core is of the 3700+. Is it San Diego or Clawhammer?

Mine is a san diago core...however, with certain companies different shipments will use different cores. Check yours with everest home edition...or corporate edition. Its made by a company named lavalys.

Does anyone know the Hard Drives interface... When I buy one in a few weeks, that thing has to be swapped...

Yeah, it's just your standard 2.5" form factor notebook hard drive. Anything will work that is built for notebooks...it's not too picky.

parallel is what the 7510gx has. Most laptops use parallel unless stated otherwise as a feature.

Hey i got quite a few 64 bit drivers for the 7510gx all except the sound. I'm way tripped up on that. The hardware for the sound is made by conexant and the driver works great in xp 32 bit but in xp 64 all i can find is an ati driver (that i thought would work but doesn't) and a realtek driver, 3.71-3.74 (that doesn't work at all). So anyways both these drivers have the right hardware id in the .inf files VEN_1002&DEV_4370. Any help is appreciated. OH yeah and I found the audio driver that should work but doesn't at the ecs website>beta drivers for the rs480 chipset which i think this arima mobo has. I've spent more time ont his then i should have.

I cant believe getting 2 hours of battery life is good. =/ But for gaming performance that isnt all that bad. But I will be using it for school as well, So im not so sure the 7510GX is for me, but I want a good graphics card with some good specs, but i want battery life, WTF, I guess i cant get the best of both worlds....sigh....here i come IBM Turion.

Turions are becoming notorious for their poor quality around here. They don't perform as fast as Mobile Athlon 64s do, and their battery life isn't terribly improved.

The 7510GX averages around 2:30 in battery life, which isn't really too bad. If you do your research, you'll note Pentium M notebooks aren't doing that much better anymore. The power creep has crept.

Since this may be my first notebook, this is coming from building my own system which is a AMD XP 2800+, 1 Gb Corsair PC3500, ATI 9700 PRO, Asus A7N8X Deluxe mb, Seagate 200 GB, Pioneer DVR-109 running at 11.5x200=2300mhz. --How does this notebook compare to my system above?
I was hoping to get similar performance out of a notebook. I mainly play CS:Source, UT2K4, and WOW.
--Would this notebook run these fine with the same video quality (high) settings as my above desktop system?

Also, can you upgrade the video card in the notebook or is it integrated?

*Has anyone been able to run Win XP 64bit on it w/o any issues?

    Thanks!

Have a quick question. I picked this laptop up last night and I've noticed something interesting about the video card. When you open the display adapter properties and look at the amount of RAM it has, mine states 256. I've tried to verify it's not using any system RAM in-addition to the dedicated 128 it's supposed to have. It appears that it's not using any system RAM. My Computer -> Properties lists the full 1GB and taskmanager only shows 125MB in use while idle, and only 168MB while playing GW. Also, I can't find anything to specify an amount of system RAM for the video card to use to augment it's dedicated RAM. I'm going to do some more testing and I'll post my findings.

    Has anyone else noticed/seen this?

    Thx

    To atcskyfox:

A couple of your video settings may have to get knocked down a step. My old system was actually pretty similar to that, but with a Radeon 9800 Pro. It's my understanding that the system will run fairly close to that. UT2K4 actually appears in the review of the system I submitted that'll be posted soon.

UT2K4 runs at 1280x800 fluidly and I don't believe I had any problems with it vSync'ed. You can probably get away with 8x Performance AF in most deathmatches.

The GPU is not quite as powerful as the 9700 Pro, but the subsystem and CPU make up for it by a large margin.

It is also not upgradable to my knowledge, but it IS discrete.

    To Mahanri:

The Mobility Radeon X600 has 128MB of dedicated RAM and then uses HyperMemory to dynamically address 128MB of system RAM. This can be verified using Everest (found at www.lavalys.com). The reason why it almost never pokes into the system RAM is because the X600 isn't a fast enough GPU to properly take advantage of 256MB of video RAM.

But this is why it lists as having 256MB of RAM yet doesn't actually change the amount of system RAM available.

    Hope I've helped you two!

Thanks for the great info. For a first time buyer...would this be the best lappy to get? Hence I would like to do some gaming and dual boot win xp pro perhaps 64 bit and suse 9.3 64 bit. As of ram the system has 2 x 512mb...specs state max 1.5gb however can u populate the only two slots with 1gb ram each for a total of 2gb?

Consider the Gateway 8510GZ, as it may have better battery life. I will most likely be purchasing that laptop (8510GZ) within the next month.

I will post how I like the laptop once I get it.

One slot is user accessible, the other is not, though a crafty user with the inclination and a desire to void his or her warranty would be able to get in there and bring it up to the full 2GB.

I'm really not sure if this lappy is good for the first-timer. On the one hand, it really is basically a notebook with a power level that exceeds a lot of desktops, but on the other, it isn't the user-friendliest thing in the world. My detailed review'll be going up in a couple of days (extremely detailed, I think); if anything, you can pick this notebook up at Best Buy for the $1,249 and just leave it sealed until then.

And to aiwapro, the problems with the 8150GZ are that it's a bulky 17" which may be a bit too big (I know the 15.4" for this one were pushing it for me), but also I've been noticing the battery life on Centrino platforms steadily going into the toilet. While I don't doubt it probably gets more than the 7510GX, I doubt it gets much more. To me, the 7510GX offers much more bang for the buck. But I'm a bit partial to mine. :D

You void the warranty formatting the laptop... So that's not a issue... I've been thinking about that myself cause I know I'm slapping a gig in there for the one RAM slot... It's the hell you have to go through to get in another... Like you said, you will need know how and desire but from what I've heard about folks doing this on the older models, is patience... I read a tech at Best Buy said it took him over a hour... Yikes... Is it worth it... I think for BF2 it is...

I have a couple questions about this laptop..... I chase tornadoes and other weather events and we use pretty fancy radar programs and I run 2 different ones at the same time along with a Firewire DV camera and we also edit video on the fly and we run 3 different GPS's and 3 mapping programs and I have the Cingular EDGE card we use and it is connected to the internet at all times while its on and we also run MSN messenger all the time and one of the radars says it needs 512mb of memory so does anyone have any ideas how this might handle it all for what I am wanting to use it for?

Thanks in advance for any help with this..... :gateway: :amd64:

PS.... I am mainly considering this system because of all the great posts I have read here and appreciate all your guys' time posting on it. I also think the 64 bit will be of use when 64 bit video editing software makes it to the market place.

Stormchaser... How inclined are you fix issues that may arise... I mean if you want to use the machine, plain vanilla (original, no changes) it would be ok... But Gateway doesn't give this computer (or any of it's Retail/AMD computers) its full support... So if something goes wrong and you need help or fixes, its a more than a 75% chance it's all on you to fix...

Wow, you guys are quick with the questions and answers.

Yes on running it plain vanilla out of the box. So long as it has an option to make a restore disk I could always start over from square one with it.

As far as being able to take care of problems when they occur I can do some stuff but if it requires some really in depth stuff with driver problems I might have to take it to a PC shop for that.

Like you said with a restore disk... And get you a external hard drive to backup your data... I'm sure stormchasers keep records, not sure though...

Yes on the records. Most of our records consist of vieo of the storm/tornado and the GPS tracks with time plots. If you sync your camera's on screen clock along with the GPS time and you can show that to the National Weather Service then there is no boubt what you saw and when and where you saw it and they can overlay our info over the top of the radar and see how it matches up.

I will take your advcie on the external harddrive though. I just use a couple 1GB SD cards right now but with the video clips being so large then a nice 200GB external drive would come in handy.

Thanks again to everyone that posted on this thread. It has all been very helpful.

You can also download a program, I believe it's called DHMODTOOL. This will have you extract the new catalyst from the catalyst installation. Then it will ask you to point to the ati/support folder...it will make a quick change to the install file and bam...you got catalyst 5.7 working on your x600. I got an aditional 200 3dmarks in 3dmark05 just from 5.7 drivers...they sure are nice. :) I just used the normal Radeon drivers...not the mobility.

    1. Just uninstalling those programs still leaves some remnants of files here and there and clogs up the registry.

    2. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition installed. Most of us would rather use XP Professional.

    3. Reformatting gets rid of the recovery partition.

    4. It allows us to safely install better video drivers.

I got the gateway 7510gx and for 3d mark for winxp home I got 1600 for video and 3700 for cpu. I heard about win64 so I got it and installed the drivers for it. I did the 3d mark thing and for video I got 1800 and for cpu I got 4220! I am happy was really happy with it. This machine is a monster. If you decide to try win64 just email me at [email protected] and I will send you the exact driver I used for this test. Good Luck
