Gateway apparently has a new S series with a 17.1" model as its flagship. The big lure of these is the higher build quality and more options to choose from. The 17" model is fairly light at 7.7 lbs. loaded and is 1.2 inches thin. An X700 is installed by standard, but you can pay a little more and get the 6800 instead. I managed a strong configuration (17" Ultra bright WUXGA, 1.86 GHz, 512 MB, 60 GB 7200rpm, DVD Burner, Nvidia 6800) for about $1850. It's quite similar to the Fujitsu model just reviewed on this site.

Looks similar to the config of the M250...

Btw, higher build compared to what?

Probably compared to their older more plasticky laptops.

Edit: Now that I look at it, this looks awfully similar to the consumer 17" model. The odd part is that this one comes out cheaper because it's more configurable whereas the consumer one forces you to pay up for 1GB RAM.

Cool. I'd like to know if the S series is made of magnesium allow instead of ABS plastic like the M series.

I spoke to a sales guy over Gateway website's instant messaging, and he says the S-7500 and the NX550 are the same except for the lack of junk software installed on the S-series. I have a feeling this sales guy does not know what he is talking about. (then again, he could be right, cuz the pics of both systems look exactly the same.) Can anyone confirm or deny this info?

I configured both S7500 and NX550 the same, and the NX came out cheaper. If the NX550 is indeed the same piece of hardware, then I'd go for that and save some $.

Looking forward to the review of the S-series on this website.

Gateway's web site mentions the S-series chassis being made of magnesium alloy. So they are not the same except in appearance.

The material is mentioned to be different, but it's odd coincidence that they have the exact same weight...
