    Hey guys... quick question....
Just wanted to see if it was feasible to buy a WD My passport drive (500gb 5400rpm) to be exact.... and swap the harddrive out with the stock 320gb harddrive in my 6860fx. Im pretty sure it is possible and that way I would still have a good backup source haha....

Also, I have been hearing good things about the new harddrive but is there really that much of a performance increase from the 500 over the 320 because of the bigger platters etc? What about waiting for the 7200 rpm version?

I am getting a good deal on the harddrive and just wanted to have some reassurance from you guys....

    thnx ;)

from what i've heard, the cases of those brand-name external HDDs (like the WD Passport series) are closed in such a manner that it is very difficult to safely remove the drive itself.

why would you do that when you can get a drive much cheaper than a passport?

Well... I believe where theres a will theres a way.... and ive done this kind of thing before....

Also... I would just get the drive itself but I want to take out the 320 and put it in the wd case to serve as a backup hd. Thats the whole reason why I would spend the extra $20 for the small and powered by usb case.

why not just use up both hard drive bays that the 6860 has and keep the 320 installed, along with the 500gb drive?

Cause I purposely want the external case for a backup hard drive....I would like to have 1 hard drive in the lappy and one as an external backup of only certain important files I need to preserve.... so yeah....

Yes it is very possible. I did this a while back with a 320gb Passport I had gotten really cheap to upgrade my PS3's HDD. The Passport cases are a little rough to open the first time but it's not "hard". I think if you go to YouTube and do a search, there are a number of videos showing exactly how to do it.

EDIT: added link (just one of a few videos)

Well... I acutally have taken all your guys ideas and come to the conclusion that I am going to get a cheap WD passport 320gb drive as my backup option because I manually backup only what I need.... and in addition I am going to keep the 320gb drive that is already in my lappy, purchase a 30-64gb SSD drive, reinstall vista on the ssd and keep the 320 for programs/etc.....
I figure this is a lil more expensive but will be a much better buy overall.... does this sound good to anybody haha?

So if anybody else has any comments... please add :)

Also... I am not really sure whether to get a 30 or 64gb drive as I will only put vista on it as well as music, vids, etc.... What brands should I look for (OCZ, G-skill) or lookout for (Supertalent) cause im not really familiar with SSD....

    Thanks

y would u put music and vids on an SSD? they should go on your storage drive... use the ssd for programs that need the fast read times to load.

Well... I decided to just hold off on SSD for now till the technology is a little more stable and hella cheaper per GB.... I figured I didnt need an ultra fast hard drive so I elected to just purchase another WD 320gb 5400rpm drive and try and raid 0 them.... Im not really concerned with the various risks of Raid 0 because I have an external drive that I backup manually and that a hard drive could really fail at any time..... Figured minus well pay half the price of a SSD and get 4x the capacity while still gettin good speeds......

The new question I have and have been looking into.... is it possible to clone or image my current drive and then reimage onto the Raid setup? I already have this comp tweaked out quite a bit and would prefer not to reinstall/etc.... So would the reimage be possible?

    thanks

I have a pair of Western Digital 1TB External drives, got them refurbished for cheap and they have been my best friends far as backing up is concerned. I do have a 500GB Western Digital ES that I take with my laptop for backup storage on the road and so far only 1 complaint about these external storage. My First WD died after 6 months (seems early days of these they had massive problems) why I have two Terabytes for storage. They are a great option, seen other day a 1 TB external was only $150, even found a 500GB internal for $50. Buy it a case, throw an E-sata cable on it and you got yourself a cheap backup thats nice and fast.

Well I appreciate the input guys but if you look at my very last post I already bought a 250gb WD My passport for backup...
I decided that just buying another identical WD 320gb HD for inside my FX and setting up Raid would be my best bet....

What I really would like some thoughts on is if I can reimage my current HD (320gb) onto 2 HD (Raid 0 about 600gb) ... and maybe any other information related to images onto raid in general...

    Thank you all though
