Hello everyone, I received a brand new 7805U for Christmas. So far she has worked flawlessly. For me it was a desktop replacement. I purchased a new 320GB seagate HD, installed it, and transfered all of my media over from the desktop. I also purchased (thanks to members on this forum for introducing it to me) a SLAPPA backpack to store my new machine. (Although pricey, a great QUALITY backpack, that our big notebooks fit into)
I have built several desktop machines, so i kinda know my way around computers. Never have worked on a laptop (installing the other HD mentioned above was my first experience)
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread212385.html This was an awesome tool and helped me greatly.
Enough rambling now to my questions.
I want to upgrade my CPU...
I see several threads here on notebookreview but i could not find any directly answering my question. (Great info found here as well http://www.overclock.net/laptops-notebook-computers/293505-gateway-fx-laptop-series-thread-mods.html )
1.) Im looking at the X7900 for starters. I notice it has 800MHZ FSB. My current P8400 has 1066fsb. Although im picking up in clock speed, im downgrading in bus speed? OR am i?Can someone clarify?
2.) Looking around im noticing processors with mobile 965 chipset, mobile PM45 GM45 chipset, GM965 PM965 chipset Its all greek to me.What do I have in my machine? What is compatible?
3.) I know i have a socket P. And that anything "socket P" will work. Im also seeing socket 479, socket 478 etc etc. Again all greek, what is compatible?
I guess im basically asking what do i search for in a compatible CPU with my computer
I put the main parts in bold so you dont have to read all my BS...haha![]()
Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

1. You'd be better off with a T9600 or similar (same speed, no overclocking but the bios for this machine doesn't appear to support it anyways), the T9600 is a 2.8ghz 1066 FSB chip w/ a 35w TDP. The P9600 is slower at 2.67 ghz but its also a lower power 25w cpu like the original p8400 so cooling is less of a concern. I'd avoid the X7900 due to its high 44w TDP rating (it'll be HOT)
2. PM45
3. Socket P, which is a 478 pin socket, but so is socket M which is not compatible (previous generation, pin layout is flipped) -
Thanks for the info Mike. I was not aware that overclocking was not supported by the 7805U. Seems kinda odd that the previous versions supported OC but the new one doesn't ...haha. Maybe they will come out with a BIOS update?

I think the 7811 just got overclocking with the latest BIOS? I could be wrong about that but I thought someone posted that they put in an X series cpu and didn't get any multiplier options like you normally would. Honestly though for the price premium and high power usage of the X cpus you'd probably be as well off with a T9600 or even a T9800 (2.93ghz) I would think. A few mhz more for a LOT more cash and more heat output doesn't seem that spectacular to me. Personally I'm looking to do the P9600 to keep the power and heat near stock with a nice bump in speed and the larger 6mb l2 cache. With the video being good, but not amazing I doubt there are many apps that one would really want to run on a laptop that need that much more CPU power anyways, unless you're using the thing to transcode video all day or something which probably isnt an ideal use of a laptop anyways...

I'd give that P9600 strong consideration if it was me like I said. Also you never know there might be a P9800 or other higher end P series chip still to come before they switch over to i5/i7 based mobiles. A mobile quad like the Q9100 would be fun but at least stock it appears that the cpu heatsink doesn't cover enough area to cover both dies on one. Maybe they'll refresh the model again with a larger heatsink assembly or something that could be used in ours.

My advice is to stay with the CPU you have.
-
I Agree, not too much of a gain, plus you haven't had it long enough to know if you really need too. -
-
I do some work with 3dsmax and photoshop. Also some work in autocad. I figured every little bit i can improve my CPU will help. But like i said, im going to wait until the prices come down anyway.
-
3dsmax is probably the only app on your list that really could utilize more cpu, maybe autocad if you're doing some intense 3d drawings (though typically autocad isnt the app of choice for 3d, mechanical desktop or inventor would be the choice there, but im sure you know that already). Really doing what you do a ram upgrade might be more useful if you're using native x64 versions of the software. Unfortunately the 4gb x 2 kits currently run about 1000 bucks, but they should come down, when they do that might be something to consider, possibly before a cpu even.

Hes old school...

I use it for work but I'm drawing 2d mechanical piping, so it's ok for me. This laptop is awesome for what I do, but being a modder I definately want more.
