I am new to this forum, and I wanted to say hello and I think this is a great source for info.

I just purchased a Gateway 7508gx from my local Best Buy for $999, and I have to tell you that so far, I am very impressed.

This is the first laptop I have ever owned, and since I brought it home, I havent touched my desktop.

If any one else is interested, there is no reference to this model on Gateway's website yet. I was looking to see if there were any updated drivers, so I called tech support.

Tech support told me that this model isnt due for release until next month, and they didn't even have a list of serial numbers yet. (I had to laugh because this model was in Best Buys national ad this past Sunday.)

Anyway, Athlon mobile 64, 1 gig memory, 80 gig HD, and a ATI mobility Radeon X600 make this run incredibly smooth.

Hypermemory is active and its shows 128 meg dedicated for the video.

It came with Windows XP home, which I upgraded to XP Pro.

So far, the only negative that I can see, is the sound is a little weak, bit I can live with that.

I would recommend this laptop for anyone looking for a fast machine.

If anyone knows of additional sites for drivers, etc. let me know.

Gateway does make nice machines, I think they're really on the right track at the moment.

    Hi Xmedic,
I am new to these forums as well. I bought the same 7508gx, and I love it. It's my first laptop as well, and you're right, I haven't touched my desktop since (I'll leave that to the kids).

What is interesting is what you said about technical support saying it is not supposed to be released until next month. Try to search the 7508gx on Best Buy's site. It's no longer there!?

I wonder what that's all about

just so you guys know... gateway has website production models and retail models. You wont find anything about the 7500 series or any AMD stuff on their website, just business Dell-like build em laptops. retail models are in my opinion the best stuff, with the amd 64 mobiles at great prices... im just glad to see a good mfg putting amd chips in laptops. Some people say stuff about the quality of gateway or whatever but from what i see the parts are namebrand and although looks of the machines are more mediocre, its all about whats inside and i highly recommend them.

I've gotta agree. At the moment, Gateway's pretty much the bargain hunter's dream. I knew when I went notebook hunting that there was a steal waiting out there for me, and this was it.

It's not 100% rosy, though. The flicker problem is common in the 7xxx series and I'm not sure what I'll do if it manifests again in this machine. Gateway's build quality also tends to be on the cheap side and the machines aren't the best looking; quite spare actually.

But if you're more interested in the computer itself than the looks, and you're a smart consumer (i.e. you get yourself an extended warranty for it), the Gateways are a heck of a deal. The kind of raw performance in the AMD 7xxx series is ridiculous for the price.

I didn't think that so many people would hate the looks of the 7 series so much. It's not the most appealing, but it is far from the worst. IMO, It's something that you have to learn to like.

Id have to agree i have the emachines 6810 which is basically an identical case and ports and everything to the 7000 series gateways that replaced them, and i would say the look is more neutral than anything.
