Does anyone elses power supply make noise? It's making this low pitch noise and it is annoying.

Yep, mines tweets like a bunch of little birds. Little sweet electricity birds that sacrifice themselves to power my laptop.
I think its because the powersupply barely covers the laptops energy needs and wouldnt hurt to be upgraded a bit. Hopefully they will with the next FX series and we can snag some of those. -
mine has never made any noise, it just gets really warm.
-
Yeah mine does it...I noticed it the first day but I let it go since ive had sever power supplies make that noise...besides im on my second 6860fx and the new charger also makes the noise.
-
Mine makes noise (6831FX) I got a new charger from Gateway and it makes noise too, so now I have 2 chargers.
-
My first charger (p172xfx) made a loud hissing noise and got very hot. I talked to tech support and they told me it was a defective adapter and they sent me a new one. This one makes no noise at all. From what the tech said, it could actually be a dangerous problem to keep using a "hissing" adapter.
Then again it might be nothing, just passing on what I was told. -

Switching supplies make noise. As long as mine does not fry eggs or can be heard 3 feet away I'm good. My Dell chirps and hums at times. If it bugs you GW will send you a replacement, but you may have to send old one in for eval.
-
Mine makes the noise too, you get used to it pretty quick though. I only seem to notice it when I'm shutting down. No problems yet.
-
hmmm..just got my 6860 3 days ago and i just noticed it does make this low hissing noise kind a like a electrical shaver far away, especially right after the lappy shuts down and slowly dissapears. also happens, when i game for more than 30 min. might try to call gateway for some info about this. dont wanna end up with a fried lappy cause of defective brick

im trying to find a bigger power supply for mine so if anyone figures out which say 150w model would work on ours that would be great. this little PS is not enough when you start OCing the video card and dump in a fatter processor .
-
Dell has them and you can find them on flea bay and on line. The trick is getting the right plug. You do have the option of cutting your cord if your handy with soldering iron and check the polarity.
-
ya i think you and i had actually talked about this in another thread awhile back but while im handy at certain things cutting cords i am not and with my luck i blow up my laptop
i know for certain that the alienware 9750 PS worked but you cant buy them also the i think the model was m675 was a 17inch gateway model that used a desktop proc uses a 150w PS but not sure on the plug fitting or not.

I am getting a similar experience as well.
The AC adapter for my notebook gets warm and if I put my ear about 10 inches from it I can hear a low level hissing noise. I also ONLY seem to notice this when I am shutting down my notebook and getting ready to pack it up from the table. Is this anything to get really worried about? Admittedly, I am a bit concerned because the GW adapter reads "Made in China".
It's about 80-85 degrees where I live most of the week now JFYI. -
I just chatted with a Gateway tech and he said to wait for the hissing to get worse so I can get a replacement adapter. He told me the adapter is fine, for now. He said the hissing IS NOT NORMAL, but a warm adapter is. The advice he gave me was just to reseat the adapter wires (unplug/replug).
I did not hear a noise for the first few minutes with the adapter on and its hard to pinpoint when it will occur as I am usually banging away at my loud games. I will try tomorrow and use the notebook for quiet internet surfing so I can keep a good ear on the noise. For now. -
Ok. I just chatted again with tech and I will receive a replacement ac adapter in 3-5 business days.
I complained about a possible electrical fire or of that sort. I was after all told previously the hissing noise was "not normal". I didn't feel like waiting for something to happen from a defective product. -
-
The power supply in your laptop; or the ac adapter?
-
Anyways, I'm not really worried anymore. You probably shouldn't too. I found this from HP/Compaq issues/solutions page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...262&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=471822&rule=65
It states this is a normal activity, contrary to what the Gateway Tech folks said.
If you still want to try out a new AC adapter from Gateway, I would go for it. Talk to them in Chat. The shipping is free (and the brick itself). You can just use it as a spare, lol.
