I did some initial research on Norton 360 and this is what I found:
1.) Editors seem to give it a thumbs up.
2.) Users hate it.
Now I understand Norton doesn't have a great name amongst the geek crowd. I was one of those 5 years ago who was on the Avast, AVG, etc. bandwagon. I was your typical college kid with no cash and wanted the best free alternative, so naturally Norton was my worst enemy.
Fast forward 5 years; I have a steady job, wife, and a cat. I'm no longer looking for free software, rather the 'best' software. And especially with AV, it's important that I protect my investment.
With that said, what are your feelings on Norton 360? Do you like it? Hate it? What are your reasons and what would you recommend?
Thanks.

I worked as a tech for 4 years and hated norton. It seemed to be semi-decent, but didn't catch everything and was very bloated. I'm still a big AVG fan, but I don't use any AV software myself, I just pay attention to the sites I go to and I've never had a problem.

look into avira premium
look at this test for reference:

also avira is light on resources -
Norton is too much of a resource hog and doesn't really have the protection to back it up. Kaspersky Internet Security FTW!

I am using Norton 360, by accident. I've noticed that even after an hour of doing nothing, something still hits my harddrive about once a second or two. I've traced this to ccSvcHst, which is a microsoft service, but Symantic has replaced the ccSvcHst executable with it's own version which constantly actively monitors several registry values and a number of specific files. As a result, 1) once my hard drive heats up, it never has a chance to cool down and 2) the hard drive never spins down to conserve energy, thus battery life is shortened.
So, I think I'm going to go with something less invasive if I can get Norton 360 uninstalled. A common complaint about Symantic AV software is the difficulty in removing it, even to upgrade. Removal of several versions of Symantic AV, including recent version of Corperate edition have required manually editing or deleting registry values, deleting files and directories and in some cases replacing the Symantic versions of windows executables with the originals, if you can find them. In some cases, you are better off dong a fresh install.
My Dad installs xx xxxxxxxxxx xx on his client's systems.
EDIT: Sorry... he installs Avast now. -
I used to be a die hard Norton user for the past 5 years. I got used to the bloat it caused over the years.
On one of my previous builds, I went with Kaspersky Internet Security 2008. It was awesome and I could tell it didn't lag things down.
Now on my newest build, I am using the 2009 version and don't see me going back to Norton.
Kaspersky is a great program to me. -

Norton 360? Do a 180 and kick it off of there. Sorry, but Norton is too much of a resource hog and integrates itself too deeply into a system without showing even a marginal advantage over many other AV/AS programs. I'd ditch it if I were you, especially if you want top gaming and development performance on your powerful notebook. If you really want to pay for quality, there's plenty of resource-light AV/AS programs out there you can buy (AVG, Avast, Avira, BitDefender, Kaspersky, etc.).

Suggestions? Avira is great and light on resources as others have said. Go with that. I avoid Norton and MacAfee like the plague anymore. Also lose the cat! Dogs ftw!
