I've noticed that after a slightly higher overclock my laptop seems to lock up. Basically the screen turns black and the computer becomes unresponsive (while playing Oblivion ~ 10mins). Is it possible that the ac adapter is overheating or that it is not supplying enough power? Temps stay reasonably low 75c so it is not a thermal shut down. And I can't see any artifacts. The only reason I say it's the adapter is because it sizzles like mad and is burning hot to the touch.
edit- I can hear it when it is 2 meters away from me!!

Just a word of advice, don't overclock with the stock AC adapter. It is unable to handle even stock video car settings. I would recommend the Targus 180W AC adapter. Works great. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=304865
Also, for me when I overclocked past 700mhz core, the GPU would downclock to 3d low power settings for some odd reason. My temps never exceeded 79*C. I would invest in a new, and good AC adapter. -
Targus 180W AC adapter? all we need is a fatter adaptor for overclocking?
what about bios and mobo voltage limits. -
Well if you overclock your core past 700mhz, it'll downclock for some reason. I'm not guaranteeing that it'll solve your problems.
For me I fixed all my problems by:
- Buying Targus 180W AC adapter
- Propping up my notebook during gameplay
- Switching from 64bit Vista to 32bit Vista
It'll take some trials (guess and check), and a bit of time to fix a certain problem. -
Ok sounds good. I will try the clocks again later today when the adapter is still "cold" and see if I can go a bit longer without the dark screen. I'm fairly certain the adapter just isn't supplying enough power. I wont ruin the laptop by repeating the above mentioned scenario will I ?
OC instability ?
