Hello,
I have been lurking for a while here and I have found that these forums are quite informative.
Recently I purchased a P7901h and replaced the HDD with a SSD. I installed Win7 Pro 64bit on the SSD. The installation goes well without any warnings or error messages. I then installed the Win7 drivers from Gateway's website.
Since I purchased this as a mobile gaming system, I installed WoW to see how well it runs. Unfortunately this is where things get a little bumpy. I attached a USB mouse and logged into WoW. However, after a few minutes the system freezes. I am unable to tab out or bring up the task manager.
I tried 4 difference mice and the results were the same each time. However, everything runs well if I only play with the touchpad. Therefore, I suspect that the problem is software and not hardware.
DXDiag does not show any conflicts in the input devices when a mouse is plugged in. I found a Microsoft article ( You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM) but I don't think this applies.
At this point I am at a loss as to how I should proceed.
If it is at all possible, I would rather not send the unit to Gateway.

Try downloading Driver Genius Pro and update all of your drivers with that. It will automatically scan your computer and search for the newest drivers available for all of your system's hardware. Gateway, while a good company, doesn't seem to like posting updated drivers. You may have to torrent the utility though as it is one of those programs you have to pay for. I too had problems with a clean install of Windows on my NV5378u and after updating all the drivers with Driver Genius, all the problems went away.

Is there some setting in WoW for something like Hardware Mouse Driver, or anything in their settings that reference mouse performance? If so, alter the settings there.
If your USB mouse works fine with Windows and other applications then the issue lies with the interaction between your game, Windows and your hardware.
Another possibility is to completely eliminate the Gateway mouse drivers from your device manager and just use the Windows drivers on all your mice. This is what I do as I hate having mouse programs running the background and on my taskbar. I also don't care for the side strip scrolling on my trackpads, but that is just a personal choice.
Good luck. -
Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately none of that was able to solve my problem. Fortunately, I managed to run into a bsod with the error bugcode_usb_driver with 0x000000fe for the bug check code. I did some searching and found a utility that would provide the pertinent information regarding the error.
The information provided is as follows:
Caused by: usbhub.sys
P1: 8
P2: 6
P3: a
P4: fffffa80`06b4ac80
Does anyone have any ideas on where or how I may go about determining what the parameters mean?
Thanks! -
Once again I'd like to thank you for the replies.
At this point I have exchanged the laptop for another unit. There is no sign of any issues with the new unit. Therefore I believe that there was a hardware issue with the malfunctioning unit.
