I just purchased a 26" LG LCD TV. I plugged in one of my systems with an 8800GTS video card and then this laptop, and geez, this laptop provided a much better picture despite the quality of the 8800gts. I used an hdmi cord and the picture is just terrific. Just thought I'[d pass this on.

Did you find a deal on that LG somewhere!?!? Well, this laptop of ours is proofing to be one heck of a deal for under $500 with a pretty decent Gaming Card also.
I like it ... would have been nicer (in my mind) if it came stock with XP PRO with upgrade disk to Vista Home Prem 32 or 64. Since most of my freeware run much better on XP PRO.
BTW, alex6 ... your PM is turned off!!!

Geez, I guess I have to have 15 posts before I can post a hot url. I was going to post the BB link.

my right speaker just started crackling on my laptop, probably going to die soon. and the left speaker only has like 50% power compared to right one. think its worth it to try and send it in?

I've used my notebook to play 1080p video on a 37" LCD tv quite regularly, it works excellently and the picture quality is great.
I am running XP, and every time I shut my notebook down I get an End Process dialogue for some "Sigmatel IDT SysTray" failing to close properly. It is a pain in the , because if I don't wait 10 seconds after hitting the shutdown button it will never shut down and overheat in my bag. Anyone know the solution to that? -
Actually since Vista 64 is giving me so much headache (not compatible with my Freeware Software) ... I am seriously thinking either downgrading to Vista 32 or XP PRO.
Q1: Where did you find all the XP Drivers for the M-6862?
Q2: Besides tha bove problem that you have mentioned ... do you have ANY OTHER ISSUES?
Oh, btw, I will look for a solution to your problem and post back if I locate the solution!
Thanks,

I just bought a M-6864FX I would like to know where I could download the media driver for the buttons on top as I reinstalled vista. Also what can be upgraded ? RAM,CPU,VIDEO CARD,HD ? ram to ddr3 ? or anything like that and anyone tried crysis and demanding games on this ?
-
Fist of all, congrats on finding one. I thought they were sold out of those for a while now. Where did you find yours?
Here's a link to Gateway's support page. You can get all the drivers you need for the M6864FX here.
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn¶m=1015623R
The motherboard in the 6864FX supports Intel Penryn processors with FSB of 533/667/800mhz and 4GB of DDR2 ram. The processor can be upgraded, but the memory is maxed out and does not support DDR3 ram.
The HD can be upgraded from the 200GB 7200rpm drive to 320GB or 500GB (are they out yet?) 7200 rpms models so plenty of room to upgrade here.
I don't play games with my M6864FX so I can'be be of help there, but I've read about people having very good luck with games on the 6864FX and 6862 laptops.
Good luck with your new laptop!

I have this same problem. media Keys not working. I was able to find a driver for the keys.
Now I just have to find out why the hot key lights dont work???? The other thing you may find is that the DVD button wont luanch... Media center luanch works as well as music...
Would really appreciate any help or ideas..............Thanks -
Hey
I bought M6862 about three months ago, and I'm actually loving it. Perfect for my gaming needs but recently I have this issue. While I play L4D, my computer freezes and I would have to restart again. My FPS average 60s, and all settings are Medium [only Shaders are Low I believe].
I'm assuming it's because my GPU overheat. Does anybody have the same problem with L4D?
-CAR8624 -
Waitaminute...on Gateway's web site, it says this has the HD 2600 XT, but when I check in the catalyst control center, it has the speeds of the plain 2600.
EDIT: Ok, I used that AMD tool that someone posted earlier in the thread. It showed a core of 300 and a memory of 400. It should be 500 and 600. -
Has anyone thrown a T9300 into this laptop? Is it even compatible? I'm thinking about picking one up over the holidays, but I'd like to know whether it would work or not first. Also, I've never swapped out a laptop processor before, but the pics in the review thread gave me a pretty good idea of what to do. Assuming that the T9300 is compatible and I get one, is it as simple as unscrewing the back, removing the old CPU, applying thermal paste, and dropping in the new one?
Thanks in advance -
Well i bought it off some guy brand new for $900 like a week ago. I doubt it was worth that much
please tell me that it wasn't a bad buy.
-
And is this laptop M-6864FX better than the Gateway P-6831FX

The T5750 in M-6862 is a 65nm Processor ... I think a T9300 a 45nm CPU.
I do know somebody has actually changed the T5750 with a T7500 and it is working.
But also you need to check with INTEL architecture to make sure.
I have searched several Threads for you ... see below ... it will give you what you need ...
GATEWAY M-6862 Specs
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2008/TempestFX/4006270R/4006270Rsp2.shtml
Look at your Chipset.
Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset

Intel Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor
http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2duo/mobile/specifications.htm
Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset
http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28116
From reading all of these I am guessing that you may be able to use T7700 and T7800. Stay with a CPU with the 800 FSB since our MOBO does support 800 FSB. BTW all these Merom CPUs run about 34 or 35 TDP.

Hope this has helped!

Download the 32bit version.
The highest mine ever got while playing a game (Crysis Demo) was 80C on the GPU and 70c on the cores.
Anything under 85c is safe, anything above that is pushing it. After about 90c you risk problems.
*Note these aren't "official" temps for pushing it, just in my experience. Results will vary.
For running games (like when I ran l4d demo) I usually didn't go above 70c on anything. Averaged 65c I'd say.
Run the game for a bit and when you think it's heated up minimize and check the temps (helps to have HWMonitor running in the background).
besides that-
You can try propping up the back on a desk (helps alot). -
-
On another note, I was looking around in CPU-Z and I saw that it has info on the ram too. I have the stock 4 gigs of ram in right now, and its timings (or what I assume are the timings, judging from what I've gathered from forums) are 5-5-5-15. Is this ram decent enough, or does it warrant an upgrade? -
Just upgraded today from the stock 65nm T5750 to the Penryn 45nm T8300 Socket P.
Lowest idle temp 28C! Simply Amazing!
Typing this right now at 35C. Max temps with undervolting, of course, are 58C under orthos. SuperFLM and IDA not being used.
Not sure how accurate temp is because RM doesn't correctly measure penryns, but I will take another one with Coretemp.
So Yes a T9300 will definitely work. Everything up to the X9000 will work on the PM965 Chipset -
@krazyphire...you should definitely give SLFM and IDA a shot. its worth it, unless you like only running at 2.4ghz -
-
so is the T9300 worth getting ?
-
-
Wow krazyphire, that's fantastic stuff. Any performance improvements?
I'd also be interested if anyone had any opinions on the various processors that can be put in the 6862, like the aforementioned T8300 or T9300, and whether they offer any real performance improvement, especially in games.
Any throttling suggestions for RMClock for the 6862? -
. For now I'm trying to keep it low key so that thermal compound has some break-in time.
Also just to wet your tastebuds, opening benchmarks from Wprime:
T5750: 41.948 secs
T8300: 32.543 secs! -
Yowza! Can't wait to see some benchmarks!
-
Too bad I bought the "GeekSquad's 3-Year Warranty" for $129.99 ... otherwise I might have considered upgrading my CPU ... Warranty Issues!
@ KrazyPhire ... did you also apply the Thermal Compound to the GPU? BTW, what kind did you use!?!?
Q: BTW, has anyone been experienceing any "problems" with Windows Updates ... like it downloads A-OK and then on final Step 3 chokes at 55% and locks up.
Thanks,
G! -

hey anybody run STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and/or Clear Sky?
They're both on sale on Steam and wanted to get an idea how'd they play before I pull the metaphoric trigger. No demo -
The left side kinda does overheat..
-
The Fan, CPU, GPU, and chipset are on the left side.
-
Also, I still haven't solved the Sigmatel IDT systray thing... no big deal though.
And yeah the left side gets pretty hot. I try to keep it elevated a little because of the dumbass vents on the bottom. -

Anybody install XP or Vista 32 on this? I've got a program I want to run (Ableton 7) that my wife gave me for Christmas but it is not supported on Vista 64. Actually, what I would prefer to do is install a new hdd in this and then install a 32 bit OS. So I could use some help obtaining 32-bit drivers et al, plus any recommendations re. a different hdd. I know some of this has been posted in the thread, but the thread is 32 pages long and so any directions to shortcut the search would be appreciated. Thanks.

My experience.....
Used the stock install OS for a week and then reformatted with clean install. Ran much faster and smoother without the crap that comes with the system.
Decided to give XP pro a try a couple of weeks ago. Found all the needed drivers, installed fine and seemed to run well. I didn't notice an improvement in speed however as I expected I would. Also had a couple of non specific glitches.
Currently running Ultimate and have finally become a fan of Vista. My other 3 machines that I have built have XP as they don't have the hardware that would improve the experience with Vista and I am sure Vista would slow them significantly.
Just my 2 cents.... -
Thanks mstng. That's good to know about XP Pro. I would up installing the software on another computer as I get to learn it. I was informed by a good source that ABleton likely will update so as to support Vista 64.
marty -
Some sources have no problem running ableton 7 with vista 64. I don't use it so I wouldn't know first hand. I was bored so did a search (ableton 7 vista 64)
https://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=227417
I can't remember the glitches I was having with xp pro but it was most likely drivers that were not optimized for XP. Sometimes I would have a slow boot, sometimes a lag when multitasking. A few other nonspecific things. I am now happy with vista 64 and after using both of these OS on the same machine I see no benefits to XP on this particular computer. Never thought I would say that and it doesn't hold true on my older machines. -
mstng, thanks for that link and your hard work. Maybe I'll give it a try. I installed ableton on one of my XP systems, which runs an e6750 OCed to 3.6GHz, so it gives me lots of juice to run the program. But the M-6862 should provide plenty of juice as well. I may still hold off and get the feel of this program on my XP system before I try moving it to the laptop. Who knows, by then, they might have a fix for Vista 64.

Hi Folks,
Does anyone know M-6862 MOBO Brand & Model? I can't get it with Everest program?
Thanks!
G! -
Hi all. I've had my m-6862 attached to an LG 26" TV, with the screens identical. I was playing around and was able to change the setting to that the two screens are in extended mode. Anyone know how to change it back from extended mode to where each screen has the same image? Thanks.
I guess another way of asking this is how do I switch between clone mode and extended mode?
Ah, finally fixed it.

Here is a link for the 64 bit XP drivers I found on the slick deals discussion.
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showpost.php?p=13427899&postcount=283
File is still available but I am happy with what I have and was disappointed with xp on this particular macine.
Windows 7 beta experience...
Downloaded and installed 2 days ago as a simple upgrade without duel boot or new partition. Installed over Vista and it maintained most of my settings. I must say I am ecstatic. It is now running like my old XP pro used to run on updated fast hardware. No glitches and very responsive. MS may have finally gotten something right the first time around.
Windows 7 64 > Vista 64 > XP pro in my experience...on this particular macine. I will also try this on my less hardware endowed XP machines. -
Couple of additions...
Synaptics adjustments are not available with windows 7 but it retained all my prior settings. Graphics driver is also windows. I notice no untoward effects from this. With these issues it still outperforms Vista and XP by a good margin IMO. -
mstng, exactly which site did you go to for the download? I'm going to a Microsoft site that seems totally legit (it's not like I don't know how to find MS) but I keep getting a firefox warning that it is an unknown and unsecured site. A very unusual Firefox warning, never had it before, hence my question.
Windows 7 sounds very encouraging, and I'm anxious to try the beta.

FYI
Windows 7 graphics...
After install things were running great. Updated at the windows site with the rec to update ati graphics along with other service patches. Things began running slow with glichy video in VLC and slow web page rendering and even got a BSOD...(first one since buying computer).
I restored previous driver and now running great again.....I would avoid the updated driver on the windows website. -
edit - problem fixed.

I did an upgrade install of Windows 7 over my existing Vista64 installation and backed up my data prior. I didn't really have much on it so I felt pretty comfortable with this method. I wanted to keep it simple and not have to create another partition, etc. My thought was that if I wanted to go back I'd just use the recovery disk to get it back like new or use that opportunity to do a clean install (this lappy is for web surfing mostly).
The only issue I ran into was with the ATI Catalyst Control Center. When the install did its last reboot into Windows 7 I got an error that popped up saying that catalyst control center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. I spent hours trying to uninstall and reinstall the driver but both the installation and uninstallation would hang up. No way to install the updated driver and no way to uninstall the existing driver.
I finally found a solution that works. I used a catalyst control center uninstallation utility I found on ati's website and it did the trick of removing catalyst control center. I then started the installation but this time I changed the directory instead of using the same default directory for both the extraction of the files and the program files destination. It went completely through the installation of the ATI Windows 7 beta drivers and catalyst control center without a problem. Now it's running great.
I wanted to post this here just in case any other 6862/68684FX owners run into the same problem after installing Windows 7 64bit over Vista 64 bit.
By the way, the ATI Windows 7 beta driver is faster than the updated Windows driver.
JP -
"Pre-release" WDDM1.1 is the Graphics driver that will be rec if you do an update after install of Windows 7. The initial driver that was installed with the initial windows 7 beta runs fine. Only after updating at windows update did I have problems with graphics. The number is also WDDM1.1 but lacks the "pre release" in the name.
Is this your experience also? Or have you not tried the driver from windows 7 update web site?
BTW...I had the same problems with the catalyst control center. Just cancelled the message and uninstalled it. The correct driver is installed when installing windows 7 over Vista.
So, how do you like it....Have you tried XP on this machine?
I am very pleased with 7....More so than any of the other computers I have with vista or XP.... -
Yes, I experienced the EXACT same thing, except for the fact that I had a of a time getting catalyst uninstalled.
I had Vista64 on the machine and liked it, but never had XP on it at all. I have to say that I really like Windows 7 so far. I've tried to put it through the ringer and find some issues but nothing yet. Hopefully I can spend some time with it tonight. So far it seems very solid for a beta.
One thing for sure, it's noticeably faster than Vista64. Surfing the internet is faster, applications seem to load a bit quicker, my boot times are a hair faster (2-3 seconds) and so is the shutdown, which is about 5 seconds faster. I get the feeling that if I had done a clean install instead of the upgrade it would have been even better.
Big thumbs up to Windows 7 so far.
JP -
That was what I noticed. No lag when on the web.
I found those beta drivers at the ATI site. Thanks for the tip, I didn't realize that they had them. Trying them now..
