hmm this just started but my temps are getting really high all of a sudden...

    Temps Referring to CPU-

I used to idle about mid to upper 30s (Celcius) and when doing multimedia maybe mid to upper 40s...

Now I'm idling upper 30's - mid 40's and jumping up to as high as 70c when watching a video....

    any ideas?
I might take the back off and check for dust or hair, and blow it out....but any other ideas?

Maybe i should change the thermal paste??

JustinNotJason, that heat bump is concerning. I would agree, look for dust et al. I can't imagine that you would need new heat paste, but you never know. Please post back with whatever you find. BTW, how long have you had your system, how has it been used, and so forth. Thanks.

The motherboard runs off an Intel PM965, which according to intel's site should support 800mhz.

I tried to install a P8400 in my M-6862 but it did not POST. Is this CPU supported? It should be since the M-6862 supports Penyrn. Please advise. Thanks.

No, it does not support the 1066mhz FSB cpu's of the latest revision of Penryn processors due to the chipset not being PM45

It does however, support the T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500, and X9000 cpus, due to those processors only being 800mhz FSB and the chipset being PM965.

however, i would not recommend putting an X9000 cpu in a 15.4" laptop like the 6862 as it has a higher thermal footprint than the cpu that comes with the laptop and will run at a higher temperature at both idle and under load.

Definitely grab a 7200RPM, platter speed makes a huge differnece and the difference is quite noticable. I ghosted a fresh install on the 250GB 5400RPM TravelStar [sata300] from my Acer 4530 into my M-6864FX to confirm, and found that performance is much snappier on any disk related tasks (aka everything, especially DVD Burning).

For a look at how badly a lower platter speed (4200RPM vs 5400 SATA in this instance) can cap performance, read this article:

Roundup: Five 2.5-Inch Hard Disk Drives with 250GB Storage Capacity

Pull the trigger, and put your 250GB 5400 in a sleek 2.5" enclosure for your laptop bag, you won't be sorry.

FYI: Useless info, Found out today my Acer supports SATA600.. They're no even out yet! Awesome, can't wait!

By the way, hello to everyone on the thread and the forum! Hope I can be useful and help out if I can! :)

Don't throw that out yet! Typically you should be able to put a higher FSB Processor in and it will run at your boards max FSB. Now there are two considerations here: One is that your mobo will need a BIOS update that supports this feature. Considering That 1066 Penryns are still relatively recent, this may not be added to current BIOS revisions, just keep your BIOS up to date. Sencond, is that depending on the multipliers your mobo/proc supports, you may actually not be able to achieve the same speed as it would have running @ 1066Mhz, I've seen both instances, I've even seen a new processor end up being a downgrade!

If you look up the supported Multipliers of your board and the Processor, your can discern what will likely happen, and as for BIOS support of running 1066fsb @ 800fsb, just keep updating (NEVER BETA BIOS!!) your BIOS, and hopefully soon you will have some joy!

    Or sell it lols :)

I got the 320g WD Scorpio. It runs great, I notice the system boots faster, some programs open faster, just more snap. I liked the drive so much, I bought another and installed it in an enermax enclosure, and now I have a really good portable backup hdd that's fast.

I think I posted all of this already.

I opened it up and it had minimal dust, but i blew it out anyway. I also turned off the AdBlockPlus add on for firefox since I thought it used alot of the CPU (which would cause a temp spike). That seemed to fix it, i was idling around 38C which was acceptable. But now it's back up 50C so i'm not sure.

Just had the CPU spike to 70c without any load so idk. It's pretty wierd. Thinking of new thermal paste, but we'll see.

I've had this since Sept. Use it for a bit of gaming and schoolwork.

Yeah, I think it's a good thing. I've been very happy with my 6864FX. My wife uses it a lot and I hear no complaints from her (always a good thing) and it sings along just fine when I use it. You got a good price too.

    Enjoy the new rig.

I've been looking for a laptop for work/internet and gaming and the Gateway FX series (in all of its many guises) seems to be the best value for the buck. After weeks of trying to find a 7811 refurb on Tiger Direct, I picked up a 6864FX used on Ebay today. Can't wait to get it!

Most of the gaming I do is older stuff (Multiboxing Everquest...so not much GPU required, but somewhat RAM/CPU intensive), so I'm optimistic that this will meet my needs. I ran 4 instances of EQ on my desktop, which had, at the time, 3 gigs of 667mhz RAM and a 256MB 2600XT, so the specs are similar enough that I think this will work.

I'm still going to keep an eye out for a refurb 7811, or maybe even pick up the 7801/7805/7807/7808 if my tax return is big enough, but from what I've read here (yes, every post over 42 pages!), it seems like this is a great laptop for my needs.

Thanks for the info and sharing of experiences, all of you.

Now I gotta look into this undervolting thing!

The heat problem I'm having is still pretty odd.
I played a game for the first time since my temps started spiking and it's as to be expected.

I played STALKER for about 5 minutes and the thing spiked to 82C.
It used to not go over 75c, closer to 70c.

I'm thinking the thermal paste is garbage, anybody have any input?

    Hi Justin,

Since you have gone thru the trouble of opening the lappy why not just reapply your Thermal ... and see if it does improve your Temps.

Most of the laptop Resellers use the "Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound" but there is one other one out there that it supposed to be better than Arctic Silver ... but I can't remember it's name.

    G! :)

i don't think gateway used as5. As was noted earlier in the thread it seems to be more of a thermal putty then a paste. I could be wrong though, I haven't had the heatsink off yet.

    Justin,

I didn't say Gateway put the as5. When I replaced the CPU I put mx2 first time, than I got the as5, because, I read about it on this forum and I thought
maybe it's better than mx2, However, changed paste again in favor to mx2.

    Justin,

Well, I think everybody has his own favorite paste. Don't get
me wrong, but I do not care much whether my CPU runs two degree
lower or higher, unless it's, let's say ten degree. It's nice
to have as low temperature as possible, specially in the notebook.
I was just curious and fortunate, that I got mx2 as a kit, along
with new processor. Friend got the as5 so, we gave it a try.
    You know which won.

Is that RAM supported, or will it still run at 667mhz? I'd love to throw some faster RAM in this laptop, but thought the FSB was the bottleneck? I know the chipset will support 800, but has anyone done this successfully in real life?

Alright i'm gunna look into it since I'm getting really wild swings in temperatures.
When I'm gaiming I still haven't had it go over 85c...

But like idling I'll go from like 40c or 50c all the way to 70c...

Not much load at all, maybe i'm listening to music or something that's about it...

Like currently I was fixing another laptop listening to aim radio. It's funny I had just cleaned the fan on the other laptop because it was running to hard and i turned the music down to listen and this one was like blowing away.

    *Side note*
I'm on Windows 7 cause my Vista partition, for all intents and purposes, crapped out on me.

Unless FF3 is that intensive on the CPU i don't think it should be that high. I mean naturally when I exit FF the CPU usage goes down and thus the temps go down, but still it shouldn't be at 70+ i don't think.

From what I understand, with the STOCK CPU it is set to run only at 667MHz FSB even though the motherboard can support 800Mhz. So adding 800MHz memory to a CPU that is only set to use 667MHz FSB will only get you 667Mhz. You are limited by your slowest or weakest link. Upgrade your CPU to something that uses a 800MHz FSB like an Intel T8300 and use it with the 800MHz Memory then you will see some improvements. I know people say that the Windows Vista rating does not matter, but both the CPU and Memory will show an increase in performance with the Intel T8300 CPU and 800Mhz Memory. I hope this helps. God Bless :)

Does anyone know the fastest cpu for the M-6862? Also, has anyone upgraded to a faster cpu with the faster fsb and added faster memory, and if so, did you notice a significant improvement in performance? This M-6862 is the first laptop I've ever owned. I build desktops and always tweak them to the max, get the faster performance. But I'm reluctant to try any sort of overclocking with this laptop, so I'd have to get a faster processor with faster ram, but I'll only do so if it's worth it. I did add a WD Scorpio 320g 7200 hdd, and I do notice some improvement thought it's not huge, but the price was modest. The price of notebook cpus is pretty high, so the payoff would have to be significant. As the system stands right now, I'm quite pleased with the performance, but being the constant tinkerer, I'm always game to improve performance if it's worth it. Thanks.

    Justin,

What can i say, my temps on idle are around 35c to 48c while i'm searching
the web, playing music and having open few apps, all at the same time.
As you can see they are nearly the same as yours ones. we've got the same
chassis and almost the same specs, right.

Beside, there is no big open spaces inside our machines, they are 15" not,
17" ones where you can find two or even three fans, and you can dance inside
    them.

i don't know which application is best to monitor the temps. have got few
like HWMonitor, CoreTemp or PCWizard and so on, but they all, show different
temperatures, so i can't tell which one is right, just think the CoreTemp
is the most accurate, 'cause it shows the highest temps. :)

look at my temps during running loaded with Orthos:
    http://www.freeuploadphoto.com/images/859_load_run.JPG

    and at idle:
    http://www.freeuploadphoto.com/images/626_idle_run.JPG

if your temps look similar, i think, you're fine.

Try Windows Key + X, instead of FN up and down. It'll let you know how high your backlight is on. Mind you changing it in that menu won't change it permanently but it'll let you know how high the light is on.

    T7200 won't fit...has socket M and 2.0GHz

You need CPU with Socket P, these processors will fit into M6862
    T8100...2.1GHz
    T8300...2.4GHz
    T9300...2.5GHz
    T9500...2.6GHz
    and few more... :)

Difference would be almost none, unless you go with T8300 or
T9300, I think. It would run little cooler, but the price of it isn't
    lower at all.

    T5750 / 2.0GHz / 2MB cache / Bus speed 667MT/s / 35W / 1.300V
    T8100 / 2.1GHz / 3MB cache / Bus speed 800MT/s / 35W / 1.250V
    T8400 / 2.4GHz / 3MB cache / Bus speed 800MT/s / 35W / 1.250V
    T9300 / 2.5GHz / 6MB cache / Bus speed 800MT/s / 35W / 1.137V

The T9300 is the most power efficient from all of them and would run
cooler then the rest. If you search Ebay the difference in cost would
    be minimal.

I play a lot of COD:WAW.Using FRAPS, Im getting between 14-35fps during a game (so far it was on Makin 800x600). for some reason my mouse seems be delayed by a fraction of a second, but you definately notice when you're trying to gun down someone. Is this the result of low fps and will upgrading to a t8300 solve it?

Thanks a lot. Also, I spoke with THREE separate Gateway reps on whether the M-6862 can run a 800mhz ram upgrade. THREE answers. You figure it out:

Rep#1: Yes the laptop can run the 800mhz memory. And you can upgrade the memory to 4gb per slot for a total of 8gb! The specific TYPE of ram? (I asked about pc2-6400 200pin) I don't know call this number and they can tell you.

Rep #2: No sir I can only see whats on my screen and it says 667mhz. i dont see anywhere it will recognize 800mhz. Call this number and they should be able to help you.

Rep #3: Yes sir, you can upgrade your ram to 800mhz and it will recognize the memory. No sir, the laptop can only recognize 4gb total. 2gb per slot.Try talking to Best Buy (!@#@!), They could tell better than me (paraphrased the last sentence).

All I got out of that

ALSO: Is it my paranoia, or has Gateway gone to great lengths to remove the existence of the M-6862?? I have looked in Crucial.com (crashed my laptop twice trying to use their program to find ram) and a few other websites and cannot find any mention of this laptop. the CLOSEST I've found is the M-6864 fx. In the words of The Hurricane (WWE) "What-Up-Wit-That????"
