I feel like a noob asking but how much more of a fps increase would i get in Ocing my lappy. Also does it shorten my laptop life?

There is something definitely wrong with your system. I'm getting some really really good frames with oblivion. In the starting scene in the jail im getting 55-65 fps at 1920 x 1200 with everything absolutely maxed down to the grass.

It all depends on the heat.
If you're able to keep it as cool overclocked as it is when its not OCed, than it'll have no effect on laptops life. If you let it run hot, it'll shorten its life.
OCing usually gives me 3-5 more FPS in most games.

I'm coming to the elite and the experienced....I need some help. I feel like a idiot, but here goes. Can someone please tell me the devices in the 7801u. I fresh installed windows seven and went to gateway website for drivers. Big mistake there. They don't even list the laptop yet with the drivers. The list only 78...laptops. Some drivers I'm ok on because there is only one selection, but others I'm not. If someone could please help me out here, I would greatly appreciate it. I only did a back up, not a bloatware and driver back up. Now I know for next time...lol.
Thank you in advance for all the help.

Your unit should have come up with a cd labeled with drivers and bloatware where you can select to install drivers only. Also, you can try using the P-7811 drivers as there pretty much the same machine with some tweaks. If not then check out http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=287180 as ashura has done us all a favor with listing those drivers. Take care.

Search for the 7811FX drivers thread on here, all the drivers are the same, only difference is the video card but it still uses the same nvidia drivers.

Thank you for all the help. I read that it the 7811 were close, but I didn't want to go and have to tweak this and tweak that. As far as the CD that came with the laptop, NOPE. I didn't back the bloatware or drivers up. I did like the option though. Something new that wasn't on my last FX laptop. Good job Gateway for that.
I'll give the 7811 drivers a try then. Thanks for the help everyone.

What are some good temperatures for these mobile CPUs and GPUs?

On an Asus laptop I just got, running Folding @ Home on the CPU and GPU, the GPU gets up to 64c max and the CPU up to 49c max, which seem pretty good, I guess, but I'm not really sure what "okay" is for these GPUs.

Those should both be fine, typically mobile GPUs are designed for up to 90C or so, but 70 is about where you want them to top out at. CPUs generally are ok to about 70 and ideally below 60, so both of your temps are well into what I would consider the "good" range.

I finally click on the Gateway Games, Polar Golfer, Bowler and Pool etc... none of them work. Something about needed to be reinstalled.

Did I delete some needed files or what? Just curious.

Thanks! I'll watch my GPU that it doesn't get over 70. The Dell 1640 I had was going over 80 for the CPU at full load (it's main vent is blocked by the screen).

Dang, 80 for CPU every full load? Man look at it like its a steak: 30-35c = cooked light. 40-55c = medium rare. 65+ = well done :p

does anyone know if the W35052LB battery will work in the 7805u? its 11.1v 5200mAh 6 cell. Ive been looking around and from what I can tell it should work then again I've been known to be wrong once or twice. I am just looking for a confirmation before I buy.

I dunno if anyone could tell you for CERTAIN that it would work unless they've done it, the laptop only officially comes with/can use the 9 cell, but I'm pretty sure its the same 9 cell that would be the "extended" battery for a non FX p series, and that the 6 cell from any of them will work. I've been contemplating one just because I hate how it sticks out and I generally don't need a lot of battery time, but 70-80 bucks for one is more than I feel like dropping.

thats the one. I've looked it up on several sites even the BTI factory store has it listed as a compatible battery to the one there selling. so if the two they sell the 6 cell and 9 cell cover all the same models this battery covers and the 7805u then I would thik it would work. I sent in an email to gateway asking if it would be compatible so with there awesome turnaround time I should hear back from them in about a week. lol. I'll post what I find out.

How do you clean the vents in a laptop? Do you blow air from the outside, or do i need to open it up and blow from the inside.

It seriously overheated once and Im pretty sure I updated the drivers correctly. Downloaded them from nvidia and loaded em on. This thing isn't overclocked either. When I installed both games it set the settings for me, Fallout 3 was put at high but I get bad frames per second and Oblivion was put on medium automatically, so when I loaded the game it looked terrible, set it to maxed out and it was incredibly choppy and slow and would freeze every like 3 minutes to load.

Unless you have oils, or some other coagulant, making it mucky then dry dust can just be blown through the vents.

hello everyone, I just bough a 7805 with the 1980x1200 display, but the nvidia driver keeps crashing on videos. sometimes I get little white lines skittering across my screen and the nvidia driver crashes with nothing running.

I downloaded cpuid hardware monitor and my gpu core temp is showing a low of 42celsius and a high of 62celsius. this is from the screensaver coming on, I have not run a video during the time this temp monitoring was on. Is this a heat problem?

should I exchange this for the low-res monitor? =( I'd really like to make this one work, I like the hi-def screen.

-p.s. I updated the driver with one that gateway sent me and it still crashes.

hwmonitor should keep the highest temps, can you run a video stress test of some sort and check the temps afterward, or does the PC completely crash? It sounds like you have a poorly seated GPU heatsink but its hard to be sure. If you can play a game or get ATItool and open the 3d stress window thing you can check how hot the GPU gets. 62 during screen saver seems awful hot.

I have just bought this laptop and i Absolutely love it. Now i got the 1440x900 screen. But with a few tweaks with the nvida controller, you can make it look really good, turn the gamma to around 43%. (this is preference since i like deep blacks) and turn up contrast high. and then tweak to preference for the rest of settings on the pic on the window. be careful though messing up can make life difficult. But i have to ask. is it better to run both cores simultaneous or the vista default, run one core till it full then send overflow to second. Yes that what it does. also what a normal benchmark for Crysis.

I'll play age of conan for an hour or so when I get home and see what the high/low temps are after that. this is all on a flat desktop with no notebook cooler by the way.

    CPU core1 29c low 35c high
    core2 29c low 35c high

    GPU 42c low 62c high

    HDD 40c low 42c high

those are my temps from just idling on my desktop.

very interesting. I went to turn off my laptop after work... it restarted, so I held down the power button to shut it off as it was starting up. when I got home and turned it back on, I got some message that windows wouldn't start and was trying to repair itself. I went away and came back like twenty min later and windows was started up. Now I can run any video I want, 1080p hi def included, and the nvidia driver won't crash. so apparently it was a software issue and seems to have been resolved. I get to keep my hi-def display 7805 hurray! oh by the way I played age of conan for an hour on high settings at 1980x1200 and the max temperature was 79 degrees celsius. Is this too high, should I get the heatsink reseated?

I spoke too soon, it still crashes whenever I play video. I get a message that the driver has failed and then I get a message that my system is low on memory. Does anyone else have this problem?

I tried to exchange mine after doing a complete factory default restore. the two they had at the store were both 1440x900 so I have it at geek squad right now, they're running a diagnostic. keeping my fingers crossed that it's something simple like a loose connection.

Well, just so everyone knows... the 138/139 trick no longer works. I just exchanged my dysfunctional 1980x1200 for a 138 serial number and it was a 1440x900.

I really have to recommend against buying this computer to anyone who is considering it, the 1440x900 screen is terrible. It's faded and the colors are washed out. I tried messing with the gamma/brightness/color and it just looks horrible.

Shame on Gateway and Best Buy for whatever trick they've been trying to pull with this display business. Isn't the whole bait-and-switch scheme illegal?

I'd be disappointed if I got one with the higher resolution, though obviously if the lower resolution one is also a lower quality screen.... (But the reverse was the case when they switched to those higher resolution screens initially.)

Then you have a system with a problem, return it.

I got a 1980x1200 system and ending up exchanging it because every thing was to small. I love my 1440x900 P7805U

If you are planing to Raid get the exact same drive, Usually the is a WD 340Gig 7200 RPM but take the drive out and check 1st. If non raid any laptop Sata II drive will do. Personally I prefer WD's for notebooks as they tend to run cooler and usually are highly reliable.

Edit:be usre the drive is a 2.5" and 9.5 mm height, this is pretty much standard but be sure of the spec. Some drives are larger (like 12mm), a rarity but they are out there...........

Can any1 tell me why my cod-4 runs like crap, and my cs source fps is only like 100... People are telling me with a 9800GTS I should have my source fps at like 150-200 constant, and my fps for cod-4 like 200 constant.. I have Dox 181.22 on balance.. and its on High Power.. Any Ideas? When I run 3dmark06 I set the resolution to 1440x900 and it comes out 8149, but when I have it set to 1280x800 3dmark scores it 9142.... btw my CSS and COD4 are on 1440x900 res.

Does the Display settings have to deal with anything? There are two options,
Generic PNP Monitor and Default Monitor

Hey everyone! Just bought this thing yesterday and I have a couple o questions. I bought a 2nd HDD, a Seagate, because I want to RAID. Is it really bad that I did not buy the exact HDD, ie., the Western Digital, or will RAID still work?

Second, I did upgrade the Phoenix BIOS to c9.12.00 and now my audio jacks won't work. I still get sound out of the internal speakers so it doesn't appear to be a software/driver issue, well maybe it is, I really don't know. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this without taking it back to BB for service?

I did read through the whole thread and noticed some people had problems with the audio as well but it seemed like their sound just didn't work period.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

A followup to my last post, the one right above this one. I am new to Vista so it is taking me a little while to figure out where to go for things so bear with me. This is in regard with my audio jack issue. When I plug the headphones/mic in it doesn't automatically switch to them and I can't figure out how to do that manually. I checked the sound settings and everything is enabled. When I do a test tone, I hear it in the headphones, but when I play music it only comes out of the internal speakers still. Am I missing something simple?

    Thanks for the ideas.

    6.) use select from list
    7.) unselect show compatible hardware
8.) under manufacturer find and select conexant
9.) select under model "Smart Hi Definition Audio 221"

11.) the system will say it can't use the driver as it doesn't see the hardware just tell it to do so anyway..............
