This thread is meant to capture everything regarding upgrading the CPU in a P-7811fx. I'm trying to answer the following questions through people's recommendations and first hand experience.
1) What CPUs can the P-7811fx support? Specifically, what CPUs can the motherboard support, what CPUs are supported by what BIOS updates, and what CPUs will require modification of the P-7811fx chasis, or a new heatsink/fan.
2) A step by step manual with pictures showing how to replace the CPU would be appreciated.
3) What is the best price/performance on a mobile CPU for the P-7811fx?
4) How is battery life affected when installing a quad core on the P-7811fx? (exact time measurements prefered)
5) What online stores have the best deals for mobile CPUs?
I'm sure there are more questions out there, but here's a start. Now let's see what you guys know!

You may have missed a few important stickies which may address atleast 3 of your questions.

I upgraded to the T9600 myself, and it has worked out great for me. Got in on ebay at a great price too.
Here is one auction that seems to be good. http://cgi.ebay.com/INTEL-T9600-2-80GHz-FSB1066-6M-CORE-2-DUO-IBM-DELL-SONY_W0QQitemZ330308919644QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item330308919644&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 -
Hi everyone, I used to have the T9600 in my 7811FX also. If I remember correctly I managed to get about 3 hours 20 minutes on it. All I know is don't go to Amazon or Newegg to buy it. The performance increase is not worth $570

When you guys upgraded to the T9600, was the performance noticable from a gaming standpoint? Like, did your FPS increase dramatically? Any benchmarks to demonstrate the difference? I'm curious as to how the stock CPU limits the awesome graphics card in the laptop.
-
I did notice some increase in performance in games like Crysis and GTA IV where there was more stress being put on the cpu. I don't have any benchmarks to prove it since I no longer have my P-7811

Doooode...... The "search" tool is your friend. All of this has been covered before.

I've got an x9100 in here though, with 2 x 4gb sodimms...runs like a mofo now. So you can do that. -
Question to those who have upgraded their P-7811FX to either the T9900 or X9100 are you experiencing any heating problems?
I want to upgrade my Processor to a faster one, in addition to upgrading my memory to 8gb (2x4)... so that I can run multiple virtual machines with my vmware..
let me know. Thanks!
Also what's the true difference between the T9900 and X9100..
other than price?

I still own the p7811fx for awhile now( i bought 3 days prior to its release). never had a heating problem or anything of the sort.
I would like to know though....
What is the fastest processor I could upgrade this thing too? and also the memory? I'm curious if anyone else manage to do anything with this laptop.
you can e-mail me at [email protected] as well if thats your thing.
Thanks! -

i believe the fastest you can get is either a t9900 or an x9100 both of which run at 3.06 ghz

Hmm, I was looking at the T9900, and I see SLGKH, and SLGEE... I'm not so sure, but what's the differences between the two?
And on a further note (surfing E-bay right now), is the T9900 really worth 100 more than the X9100?
And what's a good thermal paste for a laptop. For my main setup at home I used Rosewill, but for something like a laptop I would like to use something... a bit different. (No complaints for the Rosewill though, still good stuff!) -
The x9100 is a TPD of 45w where as the T9900 is 35w. If you use battery or if you have a cooling issue the T9900 is the way to go. Only other issue sould fal to your brick. If it is alrraedy running really hot you may not want to add additional strain to it.
I use a Targus 180w so other than cooling issues I could power even a desktop CPU. Those stock gateway bricks can be questionable though and are only borderline for even the stock system IMHO. -

Extreme CPU users may want to try this

I can only suggest the Targus 180 Watt. More than ample but I have not tried others as I tried the Targus and since it was so good never bothered trying other aftermarket bricks.
